Columbia Science Honors Program

Hey, I applied to the program and will be taking the entrance exam.

Can someone please fill me in on the exam and exactly what they take into consideration.

I know that there is:
- an easy science section
- an easy math section
- an extremely difficult challenge-math section

What's weighted more? the exam, the transcript, the statement of interest or the recommendation?

How can I study for it?

Thanks in advance...

... the test by farrrrrrrrrr. As long as you do VERY well on the challenge section you will get in. On the other hand, if you dont do well on the challenge, your chances of getting in are essentially zip.

the science test includes earth science, bio, chem, and physics.

Expect AMC-type questions for the math challenge part. Just look over a few questions like those and you'll be fine.

Try here: http://www.unl.edu/amc/a-activities/a7-problems/problem81012archive.html

oh...AMC questions!?

i never took the AMC (too lazy, will do it next yr) but i got approx. 12/20 and 16/20 on ones that my friend got me after he took the AMC....is that good enough for columbia?

Copying my post from your What are my chances thread...

The test really isn't something you can study for... it tests general science knowledge and the math section is basic algebra and arithmetic. The "challenge" section is 20 questions that range in difficulty, with none of them covering anything more than precalc.

I think the test they administer is just to verify your transcript and teacher recommendations, which are probably weighed more heavily.

As for statement of interest, I actually forgot to do that part when I was applying...I guess I misread that part. Regardless, I still got in.

Good luck. ;)

Btw, truazn8948532, what do you base your claim on? I've always thought the test, even the challenge section, is pretty easy, and if that was weighed most, then there would be too many qualified applicants...

So would you say that theres really no effective way to study for the exam?

I guess you can brush up on your basic science knowledge, but realistically, it's more of a test of what you have developed during the course of your life.

I remember that one of the questions I had was "What is the Gulf Stream?"

Are the science questions kind of common sense?, cause I never took a earth science course and I remember absolutely NOTHING from biology and dont exactly have time to study.
Are there any other questions you remember?
And gxing, you seem pretty knowledgable about the program, are the math questions on the challenge section really AMC type? Would you say they're similar to sat math?

The "challenge" math questions are definitely harder than SAT math questions. If you want to make a comparison between it and the AMC, however, problem #20 (last problem) on the "challenge" section is about equal in difficulty to question #15 on the AMC.

Again, most of the questions test general knowledge. A good portion of them are reading graphs and tables. If you have a strong basic science background, you should be more than ready.

Good luck. :)

How much time do you get for the portions of the test?
thanks for your help gxing

Something like an hour I think? Don't remember... But you have MORE than enough time.

I am international. Am i suppose to fly there just to take the entrace exam??

lol....u have to go to the program every saturday....if u don't like within 30-40 miles of columbia and can commute, only then apply..or else you=screwed.

oh haha ok
