Hi All,
I'm currently a high school freshman, and I have always loved Columbia. But I have never been particularly interested in the sciences, and plan to go into law or business. Do you think that it is still worth a shot to apply to the Columbia SHP (Science Honors Program) if I don't plan on going into the sciences? Is there another program that you would suggest (that would help my admission into Columbia when I apply?)

People often have this misconception that going to a certain school’s program will help them in admissions.

If you have no interest in science, don’t do it to pad up your resume.

It would benefit you more to take a business related class at your local community college than to take this “honors” program.

Alright thanks! But would it benefit me to take a Columbia college level class vs. a non-Columbia college level class (during HS)? Does Columbia offer any business and/or law programs for high school students? Thanks so much!

Don’t take SHP if you don’t like the sciences! I didn’t, and I still got in. I think this is what you’re looking for: [Columbia Summer Program for High Schoolers](http://ce.columbia.edu/Summer-Program-High-School-Students-NYC) You get to live in Columbia dorms and take classes at Columbia!

thanks sooo much! but do you know how much the final cost is? because it says INITIAL payment of $500. that’s pretty hefty. do you think that that would strongly help my chances of being admitted? thanks for your help again! congrats on your acceptance!

fairy_dreams is correct in saying that attending the program will not help in gaining admission to Columbia. Why not spend the summer playing baseball, or learning how to sail, or working at a summer camp for kids? You have plenty of time to get “academic.”

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I didn’t really want to create a new thread. For the '10-'11 columbia SHP program, I already applied and stuff, but I selected my test date as April 10th, saturday… but I just found out today that NYSML is also on that day. So how can I change my testing date? Can I do it through email? I would call them, but email just seems much more convenient. Also, i tried to find their email on their website, but its either I’m really stupid or they don’t have it on their website… Can anyone help me?

Shph119, I would call them. They’re really nice and will probably let you change as long as the other date hasn’t already passed. I’m in SHP now and I really like it (most of the time… right now I’m in a boring class but at least we get let out early a lot :D).
If you want the director’s email he emailed us about a cancellation a couple weeks ago. I’ll PM it to you if you PM me first.
