Columbia Transfer Advice/Chance Please!

Is a 3.7 GPA (all As, B in Calc) in an engineering/business dual degree competitive at all? Im a freshman at USC and I may start to consider transferring to columbia's econ lol, I have pretty good ECs (I even have a leadership position this year), am in a sports team, a ton of professional experience (interning at a renowned firm this summer too), and I'm sure writing the best killer essays wont be a problem for me (I am a master of persuasive and eloquent *****ting - this I * you not, I was just too blinded by fear to do something creative last year).

Oh and how much weight is put on your high school record (Can I even have a high school prof recommend me)? I have a 1400/2100 SAT LOLz... pretty low for columbia standards right?

I guess transferring in as a junior would be the best option (tell me if Im wrong) - this gives me 1.5 more years to bump up my GPA even more and secure even more prestigious internships etc before turning in my app. Any other opinions/ advice?

A little bit of searching gives you the answer to your question.

Straight from the columbia website:
How heavily do my high school record and standardized test scores weigh in the decision-making process?
Due to the timing of the transfer process, we are generally unable to consider grades earned in the second semester of the year of application; thus, high school grades, rigor of program and standardized test scores are all important in the evaluation of transfer credentials, especially for students applying for sophomore standing. If you have applied to Columbia previously, the documents you provided at that time will not roll over; you must resubmit any information requested by this transfer application.

Obviously, the farther you are from high school, the less importance is placed on it.

Columbia says a 3.5 GPA is the minimum required. Also, no, a high school recommendation will not fly. You’ll need a statement of good standing from your adviser/dean as well as two professor recommendations.

Anyone willing to read a transfer essay? Thanks

^ lol sure PM me if you want

Are you planning to apply to SEAS or the College? If the latter. do you have a foreign language? That could be important to your application. Part of the consideration is whether you can complete the requirements on time, and the foreign language requirement is a lenghy one if you haven’t started it. Think about what other requirements you can transfer. There is nothing that will exempt you from Lit Hum and CC, but are and music appreciation classes will usually satisfy the art and music humanities requirements. Have you thought about re-taking the SATs?

^ Do they waive the foreign language requirement for foreign students, I can speak 3 languages and am conversant in one more

Your scores are all in the right ballpark. The 3.5 on the website is more to dissuade more people from applying. I know a student who received a 3.3 and was accepted as a junior transfer. You meet all the prereqs comfortably.

wow Aristororty, that gives me a little encouragement.

@HappyBuddha, dont worry man your stats are fine. I want to transfer as well and I have a 3.53 gpa  Just be sure to have a really good reason for transferring and good luck :)

^ lolz yeah, very encouraging hope thats true

@HappyBuddha Did you get in? I am applying to Columbia this year, and I go to a similar school in terms of ranking, and it would great if you can let me know.
