while on the topic of the personal statement…is it supposed to be pretty much just like a first-year personal statement? I mean, it doesn’t have to say anything about reasons for transferring or anything because that’s in the short answer part, right? What do you guys think?

in my PS i incorporate a slight “why columbia”… would adcoms not want it because it delineates from the topic? I can Pm anyone who’s interested the essay.

Anyone get the letter ?

I didn’t get the letter but I got the e-mails

same here, but on my account my old SAT scores are recorded =( I wish columbia would forget about my bad scores.

-3.852 gpa @ fordham, business major (so far there are at least 4 classes that wont transfer over were I to be accepted)
-SAT: 1340/1600
-97ish hs GPA
-rec was pretty good (from a philosophy prof)
-essay: why columbia? wrote about how fordham doesn’t an active prelaw community and it isn’t always efficient when registering for classes.
personal essay: wrote about a car accident I had, how that influenced my career goals (microfinance) what I want to do with my life, etc.
-I spent like 250 hours in Dean’s office just to get her to write the Statement of Good Standing…she didn’t understand that you only need to check a few boxes and write 1-2 sentences; she wrote a letter with the appropriate stationary and the whole nine. unfortunately I didn’t get to read it, but she did dictate its contents while I was there, sounded okay (very business heavy; it complements my prof recommendation, because I want to do a JD/MBA after undergrad and he wrote about law and LSAT-related stuff)
-submitted a Kaplan-sponsored LSAT as extra stuff (got a 175, hopefully that offsets the low SAT)
I had internships at a hedge fund and a trading firm and volunteering at my church. I think I got a halfway decent shot but I’m not holding my breath.
Good luck to everyone!!!

anybody know when decisions come out? i’m stressed as it it to try to get a loan. no loan=no transfer =(

will the essay prompts change? I’m applying for fall of 2011, and I want to start writing some of these essays

xxk4ixx, I doubt they will. There will always be something concerning why you want to transfer, why Columbia specifically, the final essay may not always be open to any topic, but I’m sure you’d want to use it to expand on the former topics in some way.

Did any of you guys have issues with the extremely tight word limit??? Like, even for writing activity titles, I couldn’t write the full programs, etc. My personal essay suffered because I had to make up for the lack of room in the rest of the application to explain my self more fully. I feel like it was truly against me lol.

not really. i think my why columbia bit was pretty compelling–i work in a lab there–so i mentioned everything i liked about my experience there. my two essays, after a lot of paring, came out to 225 and 450 words from like over 300 and 500 respectively. i think iwas able to cut them down so much because in the personal essay i focused on one aspect of myself and then built it around columbia. but now it’s up to the gods up in Hamilton…

Finally! my application page is showing that they’ve received everything, including my high school transcript. now I can stop annoying my high school to make sure they sent everything but I don’t see a box for whether they received the “Statement of Good Standing.” is that unique to me?

yea I don’t see that box either

they haven’t recieved any of my stuff other than my actual application :(

nahsim, first thing I would do is email your professor and tell him to send the recommendation ASAP; you can muster up an excuse for transcripts (physically lost in the mail) but it may be a little harder for the recco. then, annoy the hell out of the administrators in charge of transcript requests at both your college and high school.
also, did you send (and they receive) your SATs? the ball’s in your court for that one.
Good luck with it~

When should we start worrying about missing rec, transcripts and scores?

I had called them today because it said on my checklist that neither my high school or college transcript had been received, and they actually had been (the person on the phone informed me very casually, kind of annoying since I was worried about having to resend them out). I think they’re still processing.
Also, she said admission decisions are out late April.

Late April?!?!?! Hopefully an earlier notification date means Columbia transfer apps went down this yr. How sure was the rep that you talked to cynthia?

Well she didn’t hesitate in answering so unless it was a lie or complete mistake it should be right…but who knows! I hope it’ll be that soon, just so I can prepare myself for future rejections with this one haha.

Lets hope so… good luck to you! I’m getting nervous… ahh. doubting everything in my app

Yeah, I’m starting to forget why I thought I had a chance. I don’t really have the stats, we’ll see if passion and a dream is enough to get in I guess.
