Hey fellow seniors! I thought I’d make a thread for all students applying to Columbia University Regular Decision for fall 2017! We can discuss any questions about the application or University here! Let’s do this!
NVM. I misread your post
Has anybody here visited the campus? I’m very interested in the school but I sorta want the traditional college experience, not sure if I want to go to school in the city.
@acort0780 I have visited the campus. It was very nice. I’m not a big fan of New York though, so it was a little weird.
If you are not a big fan of NY, then why would you want to apply to Columbia, @DreamforIvy ? Especially when you have 20 other schools you want to apply to, lol.
I’ve been to the campus several times although I’m in love with NYC, so it’s probably a little biased. I’d say that in comparison to NYU, it has more of a campus feel, although still not traditional. It’s very pretty and centralized around a quad.
Has anyone started on the supplemental questions?
Here they are for reference:
What aspect of the Columbia community, outside of the classroom, would you most want to impact and why? (150 words or less)
List the titles of the required readings from courses during the school year or summer that you enjoyed most in the past year. (150 words or less)
List the titles of the books you read for pleasure that you enjoyed most in the past year. (150 words or less)
List the titles of the print, electronic publications and websites you read regularly. (150 words or less)
List the titles of the films, concerts, shows, exhibits, lectures and other entertainments you enjoyed most in the past year. (150 words or less)
Please tell us what you value most about Columbia and why. (300 words or less)
I’ve started them. I’m having a lot of trouble narrowing down my books for pleasure list though. I don’t want it to be too overwhelming. I’m right at the 150 word limit, but it looks very cluttered.
Never visited and not so sure I’d like going to college in a city (I like MIT a lot, but I know that Cambridge isn’t really a city), but the application is interesting so I’m applying! I’m going for Engineering.
did you list and explain or just list your favorite books?
Thanks!
I’m just listing mine (for academic, I separated it into categories based on the type of work since it didn’t explicitly ask for books, though).
are you just listing for all the other “list” questions?
Thanks!
Yup.
Did you guys include authors? I know in years past people did but it explicitly just says list the titles this year so authors or nah?
I’m listing authors.
Is anybody explaining why you liked the books, websites, films, etc. or are you all just listing which ones you like? I only ask this because the word limit is 150 and I feel like I should explain why I chose the books, films, etc.
Thanks!
@tjb234 I don’t think I have enough space for that (except perhaps in the websites section); I think it’s more to allow for people who read a lot of books or frequent a lot of websites or are film buffs.
@tjb234 you shouldnt explain why, just list them
hey, what made you all decide to apply rd vs ed??
@melrosethecat I’m applying SCEA to princeton which is my first choice
