****Columbia University Class of 2021 Regular Decision Thread****

sat score of 1400 good enough?

Currently working on Columbia essays. My ACT is lower than 26 and GPA is 4.0. The only chance I have is to write a compelling essay. Guys, do you think I have a chance in getting accepted? I feel bad and don’t think it might worth applying with not good enough test score.

@freshafricanprince Yes, you do! My friend got in with a 23 ACT.

Hey guys! I have one supplemental essay left, and its the “what community would you like to impact most” one. I read on a different website that I could choose an extracurricular that I do in HS and talk about impacting that community at CU, but their example was debate team. My extracurricular would be dance which I feel like is not as impressive as debate team. Should I talk about something else or do you think it’d be a strong enough essay if I talked about dance?

@lilgalic “My extracurricular would be dance which I feel like is not as impressive as debate team.” The point of the essays is not to IMPRESS anyone but to allow the readers to know you and what makes you tick. You simply don’t invent some topic – if you honestly feel dance is where you’d like to affect matters over other pursuits you have or might have, then do so.

Don’t overthink this.

@lilgalic In my opinion, the topic would be perfect! The thing that distinguishes you from others is HOW you write it:) If dance truly means a lot to you, then you should definitely show that side of you

@freshafricanprince It’s always worth a try! I know people who got 35s and 36s on the ACT and got rejected from Ivy Leagues. Standardized testing doesn’t reflect your potential as a student.

@dreamforivy @T26E4 thanks for the input!! I hope what I wrote is alright. Fingers crossed

@DreamforIvy thanks for the motivation. Well, your friend must have an amazing essay.

i have 2 c’s on my report and i still havent written my impact essay really dont know how to approach it…

@LV98xx this website was super helpful for the essays http://blog.■■■■■■■■■■■■/tips-for-answering-columbia-university-2016-17-supplemental-essay-prompts/

Does anyone else have trouble answering the one about the books read for pleasure in the past year?

@jzeleke It’s not a hard question. All you need to do is list your favourite books that you read in the past 12 months.

@jzeleke they’re not trying to trick you with this one, it can be a short list

submitting my app at 10pm ugh

Is it possible to send the supplement material after the deadline? Or is supposed to be submitted with common app?

same I’m so scared to submit

Haha, if you’re finished, just submit. I’d rather have it in so I can stop worrying about it.

@Danny3895 In one of their emails they said applicants will not be penalized if some of their credentials arrive after the deadline, but I don’t think there’s a way to submit the supplement essays after today.

Does anyone have a more specific date for decision release than “late March”? Was there a specific date that people got responses last year?
