Oh, and for those who didn't make it early:

Just move on. Tomorrow is another day, and my advice is to come up smiling. Columbia is gonna kick themselves when they realize that they didn't get mentioned in your future biography. Remember Richard Feynman? Haha

General Comments: I NEVER thought I would be making this post... I feel extremely lucky and somewhat confused at the whole college process... I was honestly expecting a deferral, but I am so ridiculously excited!!!! Congrats and good luck to all... life goes on.

For the SEAS guys, did you get a SEAS specific email or just a generalized acceptance email? In the past there were SEAS specific emails but I just got a general CU acceptance email so I was just wondering.

congrats to the columbia acceptees. btw, if you don't mind can you all pretty pretty please withdraw your EA apps so you can raise the rest of our chances by .01% ;) thanks!

Interview was meh. Did not inspire confidence.

Was able to do an overnight visit -- maybe that helped?

Oh my God (this is my mother's account - I'm just hijacking it)!!!! I am shocked. Totally, completely shocked. I was really just hoping for a deferral - it's all a crapshoot, I guess. Could easily have gone the other way.

Much good luck to deferees... You still have a better chance RD than those who are just now applying.

This is mom again: I think that the essay was probably a tip factor.

Best wishes to all.

DDs brother was deferred then rejected at Yale; rejected outright at MIT... Then was waitlisted at Princeton... Now happy at Princeton, after acceptance from the waitlist. There is definitely life after deferral or "worse."

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT:CR: 780 M: 700 W: 740 (Essay 11)
[] SAT IIs: Chemistry: 750 Math IIC: 780
[] ACT: 34 composite.

[/ul]Subjective:
[ul]
[] Essays: Counselor told me it was great, I'll post this if you want
[] Teacher Recs: Most likely good. Don't have much of a basis for comparison so I can't give an accurate assessment.
[] Counselor Rec: Unsure, I gave her a lot to write about so it was most likely good.
[] Hook (if any): I own a small business with over 200 customers and 1st Place at State Debate (not sure if that's totally unique), qualified for nationals debate twice and also took 3rd at State my sophomore year.
[/ul]Location/Person:SLC[ul]
[] State or Country:Utah
[] School Type:Private/Catholic
[] Ethnicity:Chinese
[] Gender:Male
[/ul]Other Factors:I've done a lot of debating and have done reasonably well (maybe 25+ individual awards). This is primarily what I did during my high school career so I wrote my essay about it. Founded my own small business which I guess not many people have done. It's reasonably successful and brings in a profit every month. And, like any good business man, here's the link: <a href="http://www.core-fusion.net%5B/url%5D%5B/b%5D">http://www.core-fusion.net
*General Comments: I wasn't really sure what kind of chances I had going to Columbia just based off of my school. I know a guy got in from my school a few years ago with a similar GPA but we don't have a consistent record of getting people into Columbia. I'm really happy that I got in since I've wanted to go since I started High School. I guess that showed in that short answer question. Stats weren't stellar so it was by no means a lock (is it ever?). *

I didn't get a call for an interview so once again, interviews aren't important to be accepted. I was really ecstatic (I know, the dull writing doesn't give you that impression) but the hours before were extremely stressful. I really hope that you guys get into the school of your choice or at least a school that fits (hey, it might be for the better). If you guys would like to see my essays to get ideas on how to write them, you can just PM me, just don't copy ;).

wow... nearly all the applicants are Asians!

from the princeton board:

congratulations to all accepted...columbia is a friggin' amazing place...

to all deferred...i know you guys feel bad, but life does go on...the mere fact that you had the opportunity to apply to columbia ED is congratulations enough...

to all rejected...it happens. 8-10 people read your file. some will like you and some won't. i wouldnt feel too depressed considering only 8 people thought your file was not up to par. to the rest of the USA, it probably was.

Decision: Accepted (CC)

Stats:
SAT: 2360 (800M/800CR/760W)
SAT IIs: 730 Chem, 780 Bio M, 790 USH, 800 MIIC
GPA: 5.16
Rank: 2/260
Other stats:
Subjective:
Essays: incredibly personal, but the topic might've been a little generic
Teacher Recs: One was really good, I know. Another one might've been more generic.
Counselor Rec: Awesome. I didn't get to read it, but she was the one who told me that if anyone from my school deserved to get in, it was me. So I'm thinking she wrote me a good one.

Location/Person:
State or Country: MA
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Chinese
Gender: Female
Other Factors:
General Comments:
I can't believe it. I thought my application was pretty mediocre compared to everyone else who posted here. I had pretty run-of-the-mill ECs, and there wasn't anything really unique about my application in turns of accomplishments.

[] Counselor Rec: No idea, but it must have been good.
[] Hook (if any): My parents both went to Columbia (SEAS, Barnard, and grad school). My dad has worked at Columbia since he graduated, and I worked there this summer.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: New York
[] School Type: Public school
[] Ethnicity: White, Jewish
[] Gender: Female
[/ul]Other Factors:I guess my ECs were somewhat different. I'm a volunteer firefighter and EMT-trainee, so by the time I matriculate I will be certified and can join CAVA. I'm in the Science Honors Program.
General Comments: I've been hanging around Columbia since like...birth, and have pretty much been waiting for this moment since high school started. Words cannot express how happy I am.

Hey everyone! Congratulations to everyone who got in ED, and sorry to those who got rejected...and I wish those who were deferred even more luck! Columbia is my first choice, but I wasn't able to apply ED because of my parents, and reading these makes me wish I had so I would be done with stupid college applications! If I get in RD, I'll see you guys there next year!

From the Yale thread, CONGRATS to all of you who were accepted!! I'm sure you all worked hard to get where you are. (8 days for us...)

For those of you that got deferred or rejected, don't worry about it; things happen for a reason. I guarantee you that at this time next year all of you will be incredibly happy at whatever college you attend (maybe not this time next year b/c you'll be taking finals, but you know what I mean :) )

Best of luck to all of you, wherever you may go!
