*Decision: * SEAS -- ADMITTED

Note:[ul] I am posting my son's information, at his request, because he's in a community college class at the moment.
Stats:
[] SAT: 2280
[] SAT IIs: Math2: 800, Chem: 780
[] ACT: 34
[] GPA: 4.0 weighted, 3.7 unweighted
[] Rank: 25th percentile
[] Other stats: AP Calculus AB: 5; AP Computer Science AB: 5
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: English teacher gave me an A+.
[] Teacher Recs: didn't see them. Submitted three (because SEAS requires a rec from a math teacher, and I didn't think that one would be my strongest.) Other two recs were from teachers who love me.
[] Counselor Rec: probably nothing special
[] Hook (if any): I have a single mom (dad was a sperm-donor) and two adopted sisters from El Salvador. I wrote my essay about my unusual family (and my reaction to being different).
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California
[] School Type: top public (20% of our kids are National Merit), but on average, fewer than 6% of our applicants are accepted by Columbia. Go figure!
[] Ethnicity: none
[] Gender: M
[/ul]Other Factors: National Merit Semifinalist; I have sung for four years in two award-winning choirs, including performing Sunday High Mass at St. Peter's in the Vatican; hold many leadership positions in technical theater; member of neighborhood disaster response team (trained in triage, search and rescue, fire suppression, etc.)
More: I applied as a Computer Science major. I am currently the teaching assistant for AP Computer Science in my school (because I was a top student in the class last year), and am taking another programming class at community college.

General Comments: My grades are very good but not stellar; also, despite top scores on standardized math tests, I got all B's in (top track) math classes prior to taking AP calculus as a junior. Also I got 1/2 A's, 1/2 B's in science classes. However, in English and history I get straight A's (and got an 800 on the SAT writing). This is not the typical profile of a SEAS admit. But -- after getting A's in AP calculus last year, I am now taking second year calc at community college. I am also in AP Physics C (the hardest track), and will have taken 7 AP exams and two college courses by the end of senior year. I specifically addressed the issue of my grades in a separate short note attached to my application.

Interview: none, although I applied in early September and live in an area teaming with Columbia grads. I figured that was a clue.

oh, got it. good luck to your friend.

rejected.

congrats to all the new lions!

to the SEAS deferred--you may notice that in the past, acceptance rates for SEAS deferred (during RD, that is) was very good. i am not sure if that will be true this year, since applications increased by so much.
