Columbia University Official Class of 2011 Regular Decision Results

Waitlisted (College)

Congrats to all of the admits! I'm sure you all deserved it!

Geez, after reading some of these, I'm not sure I actually do deserve it.

*Decision: ACCEPTED! *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 730 Writing, 760 Math, 800 CR
[] SAT IIs: 720 Lit, 760 Math IIC, 780 Bio, 800 USH
[] GPA: We don't use the 4.0 scale...I have about a 97-98 average.
[] Rank: We don't rank.
[] Other stats:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Good, I guess - wrote about a racist encounter on a NYC subway train. It was the same essay that I sent to Harvard & Yale though (from which I got rejected). Still, I guess it must have done the trick.
[] Teacher Recs: No idea. Should be good though since teachers love me.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea either. But my counselor said she tried to make it thoughtful and personal.
[] Hook (if any): Not sure...Asian who lived her childhood in Sweden? Or maybe the fact that I founded the Ambassadors Society in my HS, which promotes racial/cultural diversity in my school. We visit local elementary schools, hold open houses for parents + prospective students, place ads in the newspaper, etc. We are hoping to draw a larger Hispanic + African American population into our selective HS.
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NY, USA
[] School Type: "Priblic" - take a test in 6th grade to get in 7th grade. My HS runs from 7th to 12th grade, and is arguably the one of thebest HS in NYC.
[] Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Mock Trial President, A LOT of community service in the immigrant community, intern for service-oriented newspaper, Ambassadors Society, Editor-In-Chief of school magazine, concert choir, lots of internships at law firms.
General Comments: I'm still shocked over my letter! Even though I live in NYC, I didn't receive the letter before the e-mail because no one was home when they tried to deliver it. So I had to be depressed for an hour over Harvard + Yale rejections until I read the decision online. :)

CONGRATS TO ALL! BTW, please feel free to friend me on FACEBOOK (search for Julina G).

sofi, what happened at your school? What you described sounds seriously like a nightmare! I can't believe that you didn't make it into an Ivy, it's almost ridiculous. Was your high school involved in some sort of scandal?

[/quote]

sounds to me like one of the students last yr or this year tried to "play the system" (probably during an ED round) and ****ed off one of the ivy schools which snowballs very quickly. sucks for everyone else.

No wonder i got rejected. People that were wait listed had way better stats than me. My writing SAT score probably did me in.

Decision: Accepted

Other Factors:
Throughout my high school experience, I showed a lot of intellectual curiosity. I pursued my passions. I had lots of leadership experience in serving other people.

I am sad that I was not accepted into Columbia, but I do have some other great choices to consider: Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, UPENN, and Cornell.

Good luck to all you guys in the future.

i dunno, nothing happened at our school this year to merit playing the system. a few kids at my school got into brown and didn't withdraw applications to the UCs, etc. but that was it. our whole class is sad becuase we all thought we would get in somewhere. some of my classmates are REALLY brilliant, too. this was a hard year for admissions, i'm thankful i got waitlisted AT LEAST. but it's ok!! i got into the presidetial scholars program at NYU and will be recieving 25000 in scholarships each year!!! im sooo excited...

one more thing - the reason why I was so sad I didn't get in to an Ivy was because through this whole admissions process I thought there was something special about it, like I'd be a cooler and smarter person with more dignity or something if I went to one. But now that I see that some of the smartest people I know DIDN'T get in, and that I didn't, it's really not that big of a deal anymore. It may sound cliche, but really, it's Columbia's loss for not taking someone with near-perfect stats. I swear to god they're the crazy ones and we're the ones that don't have the problems.

waitlisted (the college). Congrats to all who got in!

Accepted. :) Haven't received the DHL mail yet.

Decision: Waitlisted

Sent in a photo of me with a murderous glare for the hell of it, dunno how that affected my decision.
General Comments: Also got in Duke's engineering school , Caltech, Northwestern, Umich Ross preferred admit, NYU stern scholars. Still need to check out caltech (i'll be posting a thread about that), but I'm 99% sure I'm going to Columbia, since it is the best school ever in the world. I'm so effin excited about going to NY and all that - just went to NYU sunday at the square today: NYC was amazing (although full of a*hole drivers), but NYU can't even compare to Columbia. Haha, I look forward to meeting all you people! Sorry and good luck to those who weren't accepted.

Decision: Waitlisted at SEAS

Stats:
[ *] SAT: 740 M 590 Cr 600 W (-_-) so not focused that day.
[ *] SAT IIs: 680 Physics 710 both Maths
[ *] GPA: 4.03 Weighted, iono how to do Unweighted
[ *] Rank: 49/459, are you seeing the pain? 10.46% FREAKING FOUR PEOPLE!
[ *] Other stats: well i wouldve 5d AP Music sophomore year but my (german for bassoon) teacher is racist and made me take it senior year, 3 AP US, im probably gonna 5 AP Music, 5 Physics M, 4/3 Physics E&M, 4/3 Carcurus BC :P; AIME i thought my score was 41 but apparently thats impossible. I just know i was 1 of 6 in my beast school to qualify, National Achievement Nominee (NMS for black ppl), Who's Who Among American High School Students, ok now im bored
Subjective:
[ *] Essays: One philosophically beast one on Catcher in the Rye, tho i wish i had read Fountainhead by then, and one on my bro bro (no homo)
[ *] Teacher Recs: Freakin AP physics teacher played me. By decisions i only had a generic from my junior year precalc teacher. For waitlist i'll have beast from junior year physics, beast from dean, and superbeast from XC coach
[ *] Counselor Rec: Beast, only cuz we both like "The Last Dragon"
[ *] Hook (if any): I'm a Jamaican with perfect pitch who creates and recreates math and physics shortcuts upon whim (product/sum for series capacitors/parallel resistors)
Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country: North Jersey (yes, by Newark.)
[ *] School Type: Public (1600 students, 459 seniors)
[ *] Ethnicity: Jamaican
[ *] Gender: Male
Other Factors: I can breakdance. I make songs to be sung and/or played by me or anyone (even my HS orchestra). I can play songs immediately from anyone's iPod (Hit me up). I have a really (german for bassoon) but useful bulletin up with 5 other colleagues around town representing my HS. I openly war with my school's tech team, making their jobs a living hell.

General Comments: I am constantly emailing with my regional rep so she can get a general feel of my personality. She's helped me tremendously and I thank her for that. I have no idea how I was waitlisted with so many poor scholastic stats, but I definitely will continue to treat this opportunity as a blessing. Keep praying, everyone!
