Do you know of anyone who got into both and chose barnard?

Yes. Ten characters.

Yes, I do as well! My daughter’s roommate her first year was accepted to both and chose Barnard.

I know someone who chose UCSD over Northwestern. Not quite as big of a difference as Columbia and Barnard, but yeah.

More than you might imagine! I’ve met quite a few women who made that very hard decision. Their reasons tend to be wanting a smaller atmosphere with better advising, feeling strongly about women’s leadership, or a loss of affection for the Core.

If you’re in this situation, then I strongly recommend attending the admitted students days of both and getting a feel for both colleges to decide what’s right for you. I may have met several people who made the decision but I haven’t met any who said it was an easy one.

I haven’t met anyone who said they regretted their choice, either. Nor I’m sure, do the women who make the opposite choice.

And there are women who visit who don’t even apply to Columbia, just as there are those who don’t apply to Barnard.

My D doesn’t really want an all women’s college but somehow Barnard seems different because of its relationship with Columbia. Is that true and should she consider it?

Charliesmom … same for my daughter (starting at Barnard this fall) … you may want to check out this thread … http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/barnard-college/625022-how-easy-hard-go-barnard-columbia-2.html?highlight=barnard

Absolutely there is a difference. My daughter absolutely never even considered a women’s college…till she found Barnard. She graduates this May and has been absolutely blessed beyond measure to be there.

yup, and as somebody who will go to Barnard this fall - it is very different. I had very unique interests, though, so I wouldn’t have even considered the other women’s colleges. Barnard had what I wanted.

I am very seriously considering doing this…the girls I met on my overnight were articulate, amazing, and so nice. my Columbia overnight was unimpressive to say the least…also, Barnard will likely take my more than a semester’s worth of credits.
