I dont know which college to apply ED to...at first I thought Johns Hopkins but then i heard balitmore is a really vicious city...i want to major in something to do with either genetics or biochemisty....and i love city life so both colleges seem good....i wanna be somewhere where the atmosphere and people are friendly and theres lots to do besides schoolwork....columbia is harder to get into since its an ivy...i did alot of research on both schools and they both seem appealin....please give me your thoughts

i'M NOT SURE WHETHER IT'LL REALLY BE HARDER TO GET INTO COLUMBIA, BECAUSE JHU IS SO PRESTIGIOUS IN SCIENCE THAT IT IS ALSO A DE FACTO IVY. I'M SURE YOU WON'T HAVE IT WRONG WITH THOSE TWO CHOICES. JHU IS USUALLY BETTER RANKED IN MEDICINE AND PERHAPS ALSO IN BIOLOGY, BUT OF COURSE COLUMBIA IS COLUMBIA. I DON'T KNOW HOW BAD IS BALTIMORE, OR HOW GREAT IS NYC... IF BOTH ARE EQUALLY EXCELLENT IN ACADEMICS, THEN LOCATION MAY BEGIN TO COUNT, BUT IF NOT, MAN, GO TO THE PLACE WITH THE BEST RESEARCHERS IN YOUR PARTICULAR AREA.

in ROTC...color guard is the most prestigious team...where they have 2 rifle on the sides and flags in the middle...for our school its the American Flag (in the middle) the Navy flag and the Jersey flag on the sides. I carry the left rifle lol b/c of my height

Additionally, JHU is not a "de facto" Ivy. There is no such thing as a "de facto" Ivy, because "Ivy" is just an athletics term. If you want to talk about "Ivy" as a medal of prestige, then I could argue that Dartmouth and Brown aren't "de facto" Ivy League schools.

OK , what I meant with de facto Ivy was of course in terms of prestige, it was a way of speaking, like when they say things like The Public Ivies, The Canadian Ivies...
And what's so wrong with the block caps?

outside of medicine, no one thinks of JHU, don't kid yourselves with those hopkins kids lol, but its a great school. But you say you are going there for economics, they aren't going to say WOW. It's whole rep is derived from its med school. BTW, i know some **** who chose WUSTL for pre-med b/c he was like it's ranked #2 for Medical school. That does not mean anything. G Luck to him and others that use the same rationalle.

do u guys know that if Johns Hopkins has a EA instead of ED?? i was thinkin more of columbia since its only 40 min away from where i live and I love NYC...i really like both schools and they have excellent pre-med programs

i am idiot, how about you just got "buyer's remorse" going to hopkins. It is a great school, but plz don't argue its like Columbia b/c it isn't. I won't argue that Cornell is like Harvard or Yale b/c it isn't.

I do have to agree that JHU < Columbia.
I got into JHU easily. I didn't put any effort at all. My essay for them, the one about what am i going to do with $10. Literally, less than 30 words. I'm not joking.

JHU is a leader in biomedical research and medicine. But itself as an undergraduate institution isn't so great.

"buyers remorse"? I do not go to Hopkins. My older brother did and he was an international relations major-- but I guess you don't know what a great program that is~ since Hopkins is all "medicine." I intend to go into Public Health-- another one of those #1 programs people don't know about.

and comparing Hopkins to Columbia is not like comparing Cornell to Harvard or Yale. Hopkins is = to Cornell, but I'm sure you disagree.

Anyhow, from what I know, Columbia is a great school. -- but I don't know why Collegekid has to bash Hopkins all the time.

Peer schools for you would be Columbia, Penn, Duke, JHU, Cornell. If you want to pre med then you need good GPA 3.6+ and MCAT 34+ plus research. If you do BME at JHU with top grades and MCAT then you can go head to head with with any one from Harvrad, Pton, Columbia, Penn and Cornell. JHU and Cornell are famous for their tougher academics. Thay are good schools. NY is better than Baltimore but Columbia is not a top one in BME. JHU is more like Penn where UG get plenty of research with med school becuase they are right across the street. So for BME and IR JHU is as good as anyone else. City wise NY, Phila, then Baltimore. Acc rate wise, JHU is bit easier for good candidates. SAT 1300+ needed.
