Columbia vs. NYU

I have one of the biggest decsions to make in my life. I have to choose between Columbia and NYU. They are both great school, so i was wondering what do you think thebest choice to be out of the two. I want to go into business, so I know that NYU's Stern school is better then columbia because columbia doesn't offer any business classes, except for economics.

business = stern
liberal arts = columbia

I'm pretty sure Nyu's economics program is better than columbia's also.

i had to choose which one i wanted to apply for ED, and i chose nyu and i do not regret my decision under any conditions. i think it's superior to columbia, including liberal arts. that's just my opinion. i really dont rate it. i'd only go there for the NYC location and prestige.

why do you have to choose? have you got into both?

I write this from the perspective of loving NYU - I applied ED and am thrilled to be going. However, Columbia is definitely more prestigious and harder to get into. If you only want to study business, then yes, Stern is great, but if you want a good liberal arts education, with an emphasis on economics, and then to attend business school after, I'd go to Columbia if you have the chance. The only reason I'd pick NYU - if you can definitely make a choce - is because there is something special you love about NYU. But for prestige, no question, Columbia.

I disagree catherine, speaking from the hiring perspective. I've talked to a few local employers and they've said that they see NYU students as being more "street savy" than Columbia students, living in a much more realistic environment immersed with real city life, academia, jobs and internships, all very early on. I also think that the atmosphere is quite different at Columbia, more stuffy.

i go to barnard, which is across the street from columbia, and while i absolutely adore barnard and would tell you to pick that in an instant, if you're choosing between columbia and nyu, i would have to say nyu. nyu has become so prestigious that there is little difference in name recognition between nyu and columbia; advising in both schools sucks; they're both in new york but at nyu you get more of a city experience while columbians are known for never leaving the ten-block radius around their campus; nyu is bigger and won't feel as confining; you'll get to be more independent there.
at nyu you get to pursue a business degree (i would disagree about the econ programs though, columbia is definitely the place to go for econ) instead of liberal arts.. i personally think nyu is way overrated academically, and liberal arts is the better way to go. but at columbia you'd have to deal with the core. just make sure you dont grow up too fast at nyu.. it's fun to be in the city but that doesnt mean you have to act like an adult in the city right away.
if you are a girl though, i wish you had looked into barnard, because it is amazing.

by the way, heat, i can understand the bit about nyu students being more street savvy, but not about jobs and internships.. i definitely think columbia students are urged and pressured to have more meaningful internships, although columbia does discourage it in the first year because honestly it's not always a good idea to jump into it early on. i think in that sense columbia does a better job than nyu does.

Look, I chose NYU early, l love it, but I am just saying that countrywide, Columbia is more prestigious. It's an Ivy and one of the hardest Ivies to get into. Facing facts (other than Stern or Tisch) it is harder to get into Columbia than NYU. That does not mean, however, that students will be happier there. I did not like the core there at all. But Columbia's competition is Yale, Harvard, Brown, Stanford. Some people turn those schools down for NYU CAS, but I would bet the majority do not. That does not mean NYU isn't a wonderful school. IT IS (I hope)!

I know this is for NYU - but the Columbia board is rather empty, so I'll ask here. I was applying to Columbia too as a journalism major, but on the application they didn't list journalism. I looked around on the site and some other sites for awhile, but I still couldn't find it. I know some schools combine journalism with similar studies and change the name to something else, commonly communication. Does anyone know if Columbia even offers journalism or communication?

I have tried looking, but I couldn't find what I was looking for.

you couldnt find what you were looking for, because it doesnt exist. the columbia graduate journalism school is one of, if not THE, best in the country. however, columbia does not offer a journalism undergraduate major. undergrad seniors may take a few journalism classes, but the english major and lots of work on the spectator (the newspaper) or wkcr (the radio) is the next closest thing.

oh, okay... thanks. Guess I'll be sticking to NYU

In terms of prestige Columbia wins hands down no questions asked.

yeah but for how long? im not sure if ivy league has the same ring to it that it used to...people are more open-minded...so that takes a big given out of columbia. nyu is hot **** now too. columbia undergrad is just...well...columbia undergrad zzzzzzzz
