Columbia vs. Other Ivies

Future Ivy Leaguer Hopeful

Hey guys, I know that it's late, but I cannot wait. I am "dying" to get into an Ivy League college, specifically Brown, Harvard, UPenn, or Yale. My mom went to Brown, which can help. I have been to two summer camps at Brown (awesome experience), and I fell in love with the place. I want to even play basketball to increase admission chances. I am only a sophomore and have not taken the SAT yet (will take in fall), so don't chew me out on it!Also, I have about 20 inventions that I will "sell" this summer/ work with company in nearby city.

Okay…you posted this on seven other forums. That says something about you.
I have this feeling that this is some kind of closet ■■■■■, but oh well.

Your stats are good, and you seem well-rounded.
But there is this sinking feeling that you may get rejected at like all Ivies except like two.
I do not know why. I have this feeling that you don’t seem like the type who can stick to one thing and see it through, or you do too much for your own good.

There is just something wrong with this picture.

And yes, I noticed that he posted this everywhere.
And dude, get a grip, IVY status is not everything. There are a boat load of colleges like MIT and CALTECH that isn’t IVY but up there.

There’s something not normal about you.
AND WHY AREN’T YOU POSTING THIS IN JUST ONE THREAD, like the CHANCES THREAD, instead of spamming all the IVY pages with the same thing?

Best of luck from the Columbia forum.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and the Guinness Book of World Records must be falling over each other to get to your door first for an interview. Unless you mean you can dunk on a 9’ net.

I was about to dismiss your desire to get into an “Ivy League” school (as opposed to any other top school) as a sure sign of naivety. But the thought of answering your question as an Ivy League student made me realize how cool that is, so I understand some of what you’re saying.

As a sophomore, there isn’t anything you can specifically do. I don’t think there ever is.

Do you’re best. That doesn’t mean do everything to the fullest extent, that doesn’t mean do everything you can. Find what you enjoy. Find things that challenge you, take risks. you need to live your life and make it yours. there is no guide, no “right” way.

Some days are days to be lazy. some nights are nights to not sleep. it’s up to you.

Do that, get great test scores and write good essays. Then you will be well within the massive grey area of “qualified” applicants.

I think if you get your ppg up to 15 you’d have a good chance at Columbia. For Brown, you might want to get your apg up to 7-8, as I hear they value teamwork and like assists.

Thanks guys for your help! I know I posted this on all of the ivy league forums, but I want to be a top-notch biomedical engineer (also considering Hopkins, MIT, Caltech, and Duke). Ripley’s has not called me because I keep a low profile LOL. I do not average too many assists per game yet because I get stuck playing center all the time, and I have had very timid teammates that are scared to shoot or take terrible shots. I am looking at Columbia not for prestige, but it is worth my time to consider it (my uncle, a graduate of Columbia and Harvard, says Columbia is THE school to attend). I actaully have a life and I am not weird, just to let you know; I am just more motivated than the average joe! Happy Easter!!1

Does anybody else have an opinion on my chances at admission? Columbia is a wonderful school, and I would love to attend! BTW, I CAN dunk on a 10’ net; people have described me as a freight train when I am going at full speed, except I am as quick as Formula 1 car! LOL Denzera, what’s with the sarcasm- you were nice to me on another thread- we can settle this with a quick game of b-ball… you get ball first!!! LOL

“people have described me as a freight train when I am going at full speed, except I am as quick as Formula 1 car!”

LOL hahahahahahaha

Why not call the admissions offices of the schools you want to attend and get them to put you in touch with the basketball coach. A friend of mine did that and got recruited to brown.

Hey rie_91, I did think of doing this, but I do not want to be illegally recruite. Is there not a rule where contact cannot be made until the junior year or something? I do think that it would be fun to play my favorite sport at one of the world’s best colleges though!
Can anybody tell me when I can contact the coaches according to NCAA rules. While doing a summer camp at Brown where I did impress a “scout” (no formal contact made- I was a rising sophomore) with great speed and athleticism. Thanks!!!

Columbia does not have athletic scholarships, i’m not sure it’s much of an issue.

Denzera, I am aware that no Ivies grant athletic scholarships. Thanks for the help though! I would not mind playing basketball in the Ivy League for I love sports and academics, and I’ve heard it can help the admission process to be recruited. One problem is the economy has affected my family and I would hope to receive some financial aid (like pay 65% of tuition through grants or loans). My family is thankfully doing fine, and I hope that everything turns out okay!

Do you think I have a shot at playng basketball in the Ivy League Denzera?

i’m about the least qualified person to make that judgment. I brought up the subject to make the point that it’s unlikely that the issue of NCAA recruiting violations would come up as part of your exploring possible college choices. At the very least, coaches will know where the line is and not to cross it. So, it can’t hurt to send in a tape, or send a few emails requesting a quick call to discuss basketball opportunities at that coach’s school.

Thanks for all of you help Denzera; I’ll send emails as soon as I can finish my endless abyss of homework. Some of the Ivies seem pitiful lately and I hope that coaches think that I can help spark the program (or make it more relevant). Also, sorry that you cannot see me dunk on tape, but maybe you will see me posterize somebody in the Ivy League in two years!!! Thank you so much!

I buy very little of what this fellow is saying. Also, there’s just no way that he’s dunking anywhere outside of an elementary school court.

This reminds me of a guy I once knew who had keys to a Ferrari. However, he never “brought the car out” because he didn’t want to be a show off.

FYI - you may want to visit [The Official Web Site of the NCAA - NCAA.org](http://www.ncaa.org) if you want to understand the recruiting rules. There are different rules for each sport and for each division (DI, DII, and DIII) and give your stats and level of athleticism I would think that DIII, atleast, is in the hunt.

Whatever the limitations the school face contacting you first they can always respond to a contact initiated by a potential recuit. So I would recommend going to the basketball web-page on each school’s web-site and there typically will be a contact the coach method on that page … and I would contact the coach … you will quickly know if you’re in the hunt to play at those schools or not.

hellojan, that is your opinion, but I speak the truth. I can dunk on a 10’ basket, as I have done for the past few years. Sure, it is easier to dunk on smaller baskets (duh) but I assure you that I have a genuine interest in education and would welcome an oppurtunity to play basketball.

I already have a DIII scholarship lined up, but the school does not have good academics. 3togo, thanks for the link for the rules!

I wish you well, my friend. If you come to Columbia, I want to see you dunk on Princeton.

hellojan, thanks for the support! I would love dunking on anybody, but it would be special against Princeton (do they have major height…or is that Columbia’s all-time nemesis?).

I think hellojan’s point, which we all agree on, is that Princeton sucks and can go sod off. Puck Frinceton, man. When our 44-game NCAA-record football losing streak came to an end, it came to an end @ Princeton and we carried the goalposts off the field. When our ultimate frisbee team had to play one game at Sectionals for the chance to go to Regionals - a Regionals that Princeton was itself hosting - we played Princeton, we faced them down on next-point-wins (“universe point”), and we took it to the house and knocked them out of their own tournament. Them and their huge orange selves (seriously, they look like carrots) can go choke on the fossilized c0ck of Woodrow Wilson.

Thanks for asking.

Denzera, that’s pretty devastating and comical at the same time! I know the feeling when I can never beat a certain school, it has irritated me (although I have not gotten revenge yet!). Thanks!
