Hey! I just read that Columbia would not consider an application without SAT/ACT scores. I am just wondering, because I am applying as a transfer with 60+ credits. However, I never went to high school. I am from a rural area in a Latin American country, so HS was not an option. When I came to the US I got a GED and have been attending a CC for the last 2 years. I wrote this as part of my statement, but now I am concerned because I do not know if they would not consider me just because of a test that I was never required to take.

SAT and ACT scores are required because the school needs an objective measuring tool with which they can compare applicants from across the spectrum. I feel like your situation wouldn’t be an exception, as compelling as it is. You could have great grades from your early years and CC, but Columbia has no way of checking the difficulty of your schooling thus far. I don’t think they can comfortably rely on just grades in any scenario; grades do not necessarily demonstrate aptitude. That’s what standardized testing is for. I’m not saying I agree with the system, but that’s just how it seems to work.
Best of luck to you, though.

SAT/ACT scores are not required. You may take the GSAE which is offered at various locations throughout the US. You do have to take either the SAT, ACT or GSAE however. The main difference being there is no math portion to the GSAE.

Dates/Locations for the GSAE is also located on the Columbia GS website if you decide to go that route. :)

Edit for clarification: With more then 24 credits, the CC website highly recommends applying for GS. If you are applying for CC, which is not recommended, then SAT/ACT would be required as redzerb said.

If you can handle a highly intellectual college, I don’t think you need to worry about SAT/ACT. Just brush up and take one of them.

Thank you guys for taking the time to answer my question!!!
To be honest, I knew about Columbia GS, but I did not think it would be a big deal to apply to CC (I’m 25, and plan to attend full time). However, I just looked at GS’s deadlines, and I believe their regular decision deadline is not until June 1st… I’ll call on Monday to ask a few questions, take the GSAE, and complete my application ASAP.
Thank you again!!!

Glad to help :)
