I am applying to GW. I love politics and political science and plan to go into campaign management. Is it better to apply to the School of Media and Public Affairs and pursue the dual degree program in political communication and political management (which would apply perfectly to my career) or just apply to Columbian College with a major in political science? If I end up attending GW, can I double-major in both colleges or can I transfer from Columbian to the School of Media and Public Affairs later?

You may apply to the School of Media and Public Affairs as a sophomore student in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. IF you apply as a freshman to SMPA, you may change your mind and major in something else after you begin at GW. POlitical Communication is different from political science in that it is the study of how the press covers storis and does its work. A lot of the decisions you ask about can be made after you arrive on the campus. You may address further questions to me Prof. Michael Shanahan, Assistant Director the School of Media and Public Affairs at Mikeshan@gwu.edu.

If I were you, I’d apply as an incoming freshman to SMPA. If they don’t accept you for some reason, your application to Columbian would still be considered. It would be better for you in the long run to have a 4 year plan of which courses to take, and when to take them. You wouldn’t have to deal with transferring. SMPA is very cool- you won’t have a better experience anywhere.

Thanks! Does anyone know if it’s possible to double-major in political communication at SMPA and polisci at Columbian?
