Columbia's essay questions

I'm supposed to submit the first part of the application before I can access the essay questions, but the problem is that I haven't decided whether to apply ED - can someone please post the essay questions?

Thanks!

i'm pretty sure you can still view them by going to the online copy they have on pdf. I think its just a why columbia short answer and a generic college essay that gives you a lot of freedom. I think you can write about anything but they provide a few guidelinse. THey also ask a bunch of random questions like favorite books, etc.

apply ED =)

Convince me. I am applying ED to Dartmouth :p

Well actually I like Columbia too but I am looking for reasons which can change my mind. Comments are welcome ;)

I'll handle this one, truazn.

ajayc, you should apply ED to Columbia so that you can be sure that you can meet me on campus and bask in my awesomeness. Word in the classrooms is that I was even assigned my own admissions committee.

Oh I am a bit archaic I prefer candles. :p

right ajayc:

apart from denzera's two cents in the other thread, which i agree with, here's a few reasons why i think columbia is better

1) you are a very math science heavy person, i would have thought that you would do ED to a purer engineering school, hence a little shock at D. i think it's fantastic that you aren't solely interested in engineering, but at the same time it is a serious strength for you. To this end i think columbia is a better pure engineering school than D, I think engineering is also a bigger at columbia - more professors, more students doing it, more majors on offer, more research opportunities etc. while still maintaining the breadth. In fact the seas core ensures breadth among all students, so you're classmates too would be people who think and have both interest and ability outside of engineering. The seas core to me makes complete sense and leaves you with a very balanced humanities, social sciences and engineering knowledge base.

2) unless you feel NEED great expanses of nothingness to feel happy (some people do), columbia is pretty and green. campus has some majestic buildings, lawns and trees, and is not integrated into the city, so the campus, while small, does stand alone. there are parks on either side, one by the river, where people go jogging, or biking. new york is undergoing a huge greening effort and is becoming very friendly to outdoor people. if you need to be engulfed by greenery, central park is 5-10 minutes away, with nothing but trees and grass for 5 sq km.

3)manhattan is the best place for entertainment on the planet, and i say this not because of some crazy night clubs or bars, but because of the diversity in entertainment, jazz places, slam poetry contests, free summer time plays in central park, broadway shows, operas, museums, art galleries (many of which are famous and free with a columbia ID), the bodies exhibition (a very educational exhibition of dead bodies), restaurants from anywhere in the world, movie theaters, weird dessert places, street fairs, chinatown etc.

4) manhattan is also one of the most culturally diverse places i've been too, you continuously hear different languages, weird accents and see different colored people, and there's everything that those people bring with them, their restaurants, their organizations etc. So as an international you don't feel too alien all at once

5) access to products, this might sound trivial or materialistic, but it makes so much of a difference, - finding a certain type of food that you crave, getting a hardware issue with your laptop sorted out quickly, close to major train stations and the air port, buying anything off of craig list - a second hand bicycle, a guitar, a reclining chair whatever.

6) a plethora of outside activities just to give you more choice than the ones columbia already has.

7) to clear some misconceptions, profs do teach almost all classes, and in my experience too the TA's have been just as awesome as the profs, sometimes better, and columbia does have an on-campus life and scene, not as elaborate as D's i'm sure, but it's still quite prominent.
