On the common app, for example, are you allowed to combine extracurricular activities into one slot? I want to do something like "club basketball and school basketball," "community service" with details in the description, or "science-related clubs" and list them and your roles in the description space. I'm not trying to put the ole' laundry list of things, I just want to condense similar activities to save space.

On a separate note, how good do clubs w/o officer positions look to the top schools, like "physics club- 4 yrs"?

I would put them separately, because in the descriptions box, there is a limited amount of characters, so you won’t be able to adequately describe all you wanted to say. As long as you sort of put them in groups, that should be fine and clearer for the adcoms to read. But if club bball and school bball are really that similar, then maybe you can try grouping together. But since tehy’re two separate things, two slots would be better for the two activities.

And I have no idea about how good officer positions look. I would like to know that myself. :/

One other thing- if I list community service as an EC, does it have to match up with the school’s record? Because a lot of the community service I have done was never official, ex: tutoring peers.
