so i want to go to northwestern and become a comedy writer/performer (i know, its like going to harvard to become a magician) but is there any sort of comedy community at northwestern? and by comedy community i dont mean a clown camp, i mean like, tv students who do that stuff

Seeing as how Zach Braff, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers all graduated from the NU School of Communications, there must be some sort of focus on comedy :)

haha yea, second city next door sure cant hurt too

Yes, there’s a student comedy group that performed at NU Review during Family Weekend this year, and from what I saw they’re quite talented! I think that group is where many of NU’s now-famous comedians developed their chops.

If you’re into improv at all, it’s very hot at Northwestern:

“Northwestern also has a variety of improv groups. The improv and sketch comedy group Mee-Ow created by Paul Warshauer and Josh Lazar in 1974 lists Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Ana Gasteyer, Dermot Mulroney, Seth Meyers, John Cameron Mitchell, and Kristen Schaal among its alumni. Mee-Ow, The Titanic Players, and Out da Box, a multicultural comedy show, along with Northwestern’s theatre department, have brought attention to Northwestern’s improv comedy training and performance.”

We had 8 representatives at the National College Comedy Competition last year. We didn’t make finals though.

I’d check out Titanic Players (long-form improv), Mee-ow (short-form improv), NSTV (sketch) or one of the comedy shows like Wrestlepocalypse. Some of my friends have taken classes at Second City, and there are other stand-up options in Chicago.

suppa covered it. This isn’t like going to Harvard to become a magician, unless Harvard is the best place in the world to train to be a magician. Then it IS just like that.

A lot of students also take classes at the iO (improvOlympic), Second City, or Annoyance theaters. Chicago is second to none for sketch and improv training.

Awesome! Thanks, and yea, second city was a big factor in my decision
