Hey, I'm an international student from Belgium, moving to NY next month to attend NYU. This might sound silly, but I was wondering if you could give me some advice on bedding? What exactly will I need to buy? The bedding terminology just seems so confusing to me!

You school will, if it's like nearly every other school I've heard of, just give you a matress and bed; no pillows, sheets, blankets or anything. You will need sheets (a fitted sheet that fits onto the matress and another sheet that goes on top of that), pillows, pillow cases and a comforter (some sort of blanket to keep you warm; it gets cold in NY.) The size you want to look for is Twin XL. That isn't really a "standard" size but most everywhere carrys it because it's what schools use.

Thank you very much, Chuy!

No problem. :) I hope it didn't look like I was talking down to you, I just have no idea if english is your first language or anything. Also, many people get two sets of sheets so they can change them out, but I get by with one. It's up to you.

If you use a mattress pad, either the type that fits like a fitted sheet but quilted or zip up the mattress type, do you still need a foam pad (the egg carton looking type).

Or do you put the foam pad then put the mattress pad over that?

DS is going to zip up the mattress with allergy cover(cloth-like no padding) so all those paddings seem much work. lol.

I would get at least a mattress pad. Even if the dorm has the most comfortable beds ever, I would want an extra layer between the icky mattress and myself. If you have have an uncomfortable bed, I'd also recommend getting a fiber bed or foam pad. These usually go over the mattress pad but I guess you could put it under if you wanted to.

I have a memory foam pad, and what used to be a mattress pad over that. However, I've noticed that the foam seems to wear away the mattress pad. I know that memory foam gets hot really easily - maybe that's what did it? Anyway, I'm probably going to get a new one this year. However, for a few weeks I went without the mattress pad, and the foam pad destroyed one of my fitted sheets. So at least the mattress pad will protect your sheets from the foam pad.

I already bought a fiberbed, but I'm going to wait until I go back to school to decide whether to just keep only fiberbed+sheets+comforter, or buy a mattress pad to keep it in place, or get a eggcrate to put under the fiberbed, then sheets then comforter. I figure duct tape will hold everything in place as well as an mattress pad, and the eggcrate plus the fiberbed might make my bed, well, heaven =P
