Let's test the theory that this year's PSAT state score cutoffs will drop by seeing if the national minimum commended score does the same as sort of a leading indicator. Now that the commendation letters are coming in, since last year's commended cutoff was 202, has anybody received a letter for a October, 2011 PSAT score that was lower than 202? If so, what was the score? Hopefully, we'll see commended scores in the 199-200 range, or 2-3 points lower than last year.

yeah my friend who got a 200 just got her letter in the mail today. I’m so confused. I have never seen the commended cutoff so low.

That’s good to know. Now that we have a confirmed PSAT commended minimum of 200, does anybody have, or know somebody with, a PSAT score of 199 or less that received a commendation letter this week?

I’m too scared to ask my friend with a 198. He is ashamed he didn’t score in the 99th percentile, much less a 198. This sucks. I’ll look for 199ers. Meanwhile I might get up the courage to ask him.

Commended cutoff for the class of 2009 was 200, for 2010 and 2011 it was 201. For 2012 it was 202. I think if you search earlier years you’ll find it was also 200 at times. 199, however, I believe would be unprecedented for the time of CC’s existence.

This would suggest NMSF cut-off scores next fall will drift a little lower than for the class of 2012.

Can someone please find the kid who scored a 199 and asked if he/she would make it and ask him/her? chachaseeds

I PM’d chachaseeds and asked the question. I’ll report back if I get an answer.

DIDNT MAKE IT!!! AHHHHHH
missed it by 1 pt
missed it by 1 pt
missed it by 1 pt

If 200 is indeed the cutoff, then my methods of prediction seems to be panning out so far. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/1257840-psat-score-199-any-chance-making-commeded-scholar.html

State level NMSF cutoffs are much harder to predict, but this bodes well for most states to have drops in cutoffs this year.

Sorry about missing the cutoff chachaseeds. No need to fret about your future though. A 199 is still a terrific score. Keep up the good work and there’s nothing you can’t accomplish.

Yea, I think 200 is the lowest it has ever been. I knew I was screwed the moment I say that 199 :(

Well that answers that.

Also a 199 is very very respectable. You will be fine for the SATs :)

You guys are so smart. Why don’t you just call the National Merit… They will tell you that the cutoff is 200. Not 201 not 199. Exactly 200.

If we got the letter, does it mean that we are definitely the commended student? Why do we receive the letters at April? I thought it was like September when we get the letters… Thanks!

Receiving the April letter means that you’re at least a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Depending on your PSAT score and the state in which you took the test, you could go on to become a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist. Here is a link to the National Merit Scholarship Program web page that explains the process: [National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NMSP](http://www.nationalmerit.org/nmsp.php)

So 200 and over is the top 50,000 (juniors)?

^yep

10 char

I got 207 and still haven’t heard anything.

DD’s head of school announced the kids who would be “going forward” in the NM (top 50,000) and I know at least some of them got a letter at home, but, either I threw DD’s out or it never came.

I called NMSC and they said if DD’s name was on school’s letter, all was fine (DD got a 222) and that I could request a “duplicate” letter AFTER MAY 1 (which I will).

Ask your school if they received a letter with the names of the commended-and-up kiddos just to make sure you were listed, then call NMSC after May first (they don’t have any emails listed) I spoke to Christina.

Powerpillow I would definitely ask guidance about your school list of commended. My S received his letter one day after most received theirs as reported on CC. It was probably lost in the mail.
