What is the qualification to be commedned for the psat? Just to be top 5 percent? Is that what the percentile thing under the index on the score sheet is? Anything 95 or higher is commended? Sorry i dont have a clue of this thing lol. thanks!

It is your actual index score that determines if you are commended. I believe last year it was 199 or 200 to make commended status.

It was 201 last year.

i got so lucky last year... i got a 202..

I think it is top 5 percent though...

let's do a little math here. okay so there's approx 1.3 million.(according to website) about 34,000 will be commended and 16,000 will be semis. that means 34000/1300000 = 3.8% to 1.2%. again all these stats are according to the website.

Add 3.8 and 1.2... and you get 5%.

do we find out if we're commended or not the same time as other people find out if they got semi, etc in sept? do u guys think the cut off for commended went up or down this year?

It was 201 last year? Darn, I got 199.

For which parts of the selection process are the cut-offs determined by state, and for which parts are the cut-offs nationwide? For any nationwide cut-offs, what score are hte cut-offs normally?

For commended status, there is a nationwide cutoff - it was 201 last year, 200 the year before. This equates to the top 5% nationally.

For semi-finalist status, the cut-offs are determined state by state.

In May, the top 50,000 students are notified that they are high scorers, and asked to designate two colleges to get a letter saying that they are high scorers on the PSAT. If you get this letter, you know you are at least commended.

In August/September, the semi-finalists are notified and sent a package of materials to fill out for finalist status. In September, commended students get a certificate. The timing varies a little bit for this because the notification comes from your school.

Thanks a lot, jrpar.

Jrpar...is it possible that i might be commended? i was pretty sure I defn missed the cut off, but my score is in the top 5% of college bound juniors.

CR: 71, 98th percentile
M: 67, 95th percentile
W: 61, 82nd percentile (fell drastically from last year)

Composite: 199, 96th percentile

...thanks a lot!

I got a 196 which is 95%. I don't think I got commended........

Rmac, I don't know - the cutoff is different every year. All I can tell you is that the cutoff was 201 last year and 200 the year before. It is interesting that you have 96th percentile and a 199 - maybe the cutoff will go down this year. It's not clear to me if the cutoff is determined by just taking the top 5%, or the top 50,000 ...You could try doing a search in the old college confidential forum to see how it worked in previous years.

I was commended w/ a 203 (96th percentile) last year, and i believe the website says commendations go to the top 50,000 scorers, which is usually approx. the top 5%.

Rmac, you'll probly be borderline, like i was last year, but it's very likely that you'll make it. :)

so does commended begin with 95 or 96 percentile?

Techiedork, it's not based on percentile, but instead it's the top 50,000 scorers. So, it differs every year; last year it began with 96th percentile, to the best of my knowledge. The only way to know for sure is to know how many people took the test this year. If 1.3 mil took the test, you need to be in the top 3.8%.

I got lucky last year as well.

203

My writing kept it down.

once i saw a table of the score required in each state and the number that received hat score...anyone know where this table is? For some reason I hink they do scores differentl in diffrent states, but maybe i'm crazy!
