comments from a freshman's parent

last week my daughter called me and told me "I am so happy it's surreal". Nothing my d could have told me could have made me more pleased.

her additional comments: "the women here are all so nice. mentally tough and hard working". She is on a sports team and when she lost her starting spot to a teammate she was happy for the teammate saying she deserved it - she said the girl was so hard working and had battled injuries. I sense all the teams are really close and supportive.

Some things to consider if you are looking at Midd: the athletes that get in are div 1 caliber... this means among the best in their states... not leagues... not just HS team captains. Consider this if you want to play a sport. Are you OK to be best in the state in HS and ride the bench as a freshman in college? If not there are other great schools to consider.

"The classes are hard but the teachers are amazing". My d says she goes through the course catalogue and she'd like to take 80% of the classes. She studies alot. If you can't read 50 pages (min) an hour you'll struggle... some foreign students and legacies can't keep up... will they make it to graduation?

other: Midd hasn't asked for one donation from me yet! I am so happy. My son's college has hit me up weekly for 4 years... example:"join presidents club for only $2,100"... I think: "are you kidding me? I just sent a tuition check for $25,000...."

Downsides? Minor. She says the boys can be creeps (but aren't they everywhere?)

For us Midd has been a fantastic choice. If you are smart... (btw: my d was a 2140 SAT) and she was "borderline" according to her coach), driven and and an excellent athlete who enjoys the out of doors... you should go to Midd. You will love it.

as a male graduate of Middlebury I take offense to the idea that we are creeps. I know none of us ever did anything creepy. We were all perfect gentlemen and very smooth in dealing with the opposite sex. There was never any awkwardness. ;)

Delighted that your daughter is having such a positive experience. Academic view is shared by our son, also a first year. He too is thrilled beyond expectations.

Parents’ Committee met, as they always do, on the Saturday of Fall Family Week-End. Letters ar scheduled to go out shortly (Nov. 15), you should receive a telephone call shortly thereafter. Not knowing your circumstances, I wouldn’t presume…but if there’s some room in the budget please give it some thought. You might enjoy joining the Parent’s Committee as well. It will only cement your goodwill towards the College, and you will gain valuable insights into the school’s philosophy, goals and plans.

My Sons definitely aren’t creeps…But both so happy to be at Midd!!!

“She says the boys can be creeps (but aren’t they everywhere?)”

Creeps became classifed a URM in '07 or '08, so their numbers have increased. (Just kidding.) I wonder what her expectations were…? ;-)

It’s just like a Midd grad to focus on the areas of possible improvement rather than rest on our laurels.;)

I never likened my S to a creep, but maybe this is exactly why he was admitted in 09!
