Our son is interested in a Commercial/Popular Music program. We are looking for the best value program to provide training/education musical experiences, network with the music industry and internships. Schools currently being considered for Commerical Music degree are the Kutztown University of PA, University of South Carolina Upstate, University of Memphis, and for Music Industry degree - Middle Tennessee State University. Any feedback on these programs would be much appreciated.
Look at Belmont too.
No feedback on the programs but I know many attend both mtsu and Belmont in my local area.
Check out Loyola New Orleans. My son is currently a freshman there in the Commercial and Popular music program and really likes it. He was filling out a survey for something else and on a scale of 1-5 how much he likes his school he gave it the very top mark. Also, there were very generous with scholarships/grants. It is costing us less than if he were at an instate public school.
I would also look at U Miami Frost - my D loves it there (not in contemporary but seems to know them all!) and they meet 100% of demonstrated need.
I was going to recommend Loyola New Orleans. It’s got a great music program.
What kind of commercial/popular music is your son interested in? If country is the area of interest, then one of the Tennessee options might be recommended for the connections. But in addition to a major in Popular and Commercial Music, Loyola also has a major in Hip Hop and R&B. I’d look at the coursework and faculty’s areas of interest at each potential college to see what sparks your son’s interest.
