My friend has a dilemma. He wants to attend College #1 but filed a Financial Aid appeal and probably won't hear before May 1. Is this just cause to commit to two colleges, then back out of College #2 if a better Financial Aid package comes through?

Maybe the first college will give him an extension on accepting. Then he can accept college 2 and wait.

He should send a commitment to the school for which he has the financial info finalized. They have nothing to do with your appeal process. He then asks for an extension from Admissions until he gets a final fin aid package from the school that is still working with him. If he gets what he wants, from then, he will let the first college know that he is not going there, likely lose at least part, maybe all of that deposit, and then have to deposit to the school of his choice. Nothing lost if the school that still is working on his aid package comes up short.
