Committment to Athletics

I've been apart of the tennis team for the past three years. If i decide not to do it during my senior year, will this look bad?

why dont you want to do it during your senior year? its during 2nd semester where your schoolwork is kinda more relaxed, it'll be your last semester in high school and youll probably want to enjoy it and do something that you like (which im assuming is tennis since you've put so much time in it already).

Good question! I'm tagging this.

I really like the sport and everything, but i've got other commitments that are more of a priority. The coach is very difficult to deal with and doesn't understand my obligations to these commitments. I'm not quitting because I want to slack off senior year, I just feel at this point, it's more of a stressful pastime, not relaxing. I'm just worried i'll come off as a slacker/quitter.

People can only handle so much in their lives. You have to be able to sort out what is important and what is not. I was on the track team for three of my four high school years. I didn't do it one year because I was simply too busy with my academic work and I had no intention on doing track after high school. For me it was a good way to stay in shape and have fun. In college I had to drop a course when I had sleep apnea. I couldn't handle all of the work so I decided to drop the course that was giving me the most difficulty.

It's not about being a quitter. It's about taking care of priorities.

I completely understand where you're coming from. I was in the same position over the summer, trying to decide if I should do volleyball a fourth year. I did, and it was horrible. there were a lot of things I would've rather been doing. in retrospect, it was kind of nice to be able to finish it off, but I would never want to go through anything that happened during the season again (when getting your senior blanket is one of the main reasons why you're staying on the team there's something wrong... ok, it was more of a symbolic sign of fulfillment). if it's in the spring, colleges won't know if you're in it for a fourth year, will they?

I'm having the same problems, and I'm only a Sophomore. See, the high school has 52 peeps, so there's alot of attention on you if you don't do, for example, basketball. Here, playing is for a letter and honor for your school, not for college. I don't care what is on my app, I want to remember high school as a good time, and so does everyone else, so we pick impressive things for apps that we have fun at. So, since I have issues w/ the coach, I don't play, and its a big deal here. Kinda a bummer. Guess that doesn't really help you, but a relatable story anyway.

I think colleges will understand that athletics are a major, major committment and that many people have obligations that wil not allow them to commit. Basically I wouldnt say dropping the tennis team in 12th grade would be frowned upon if you explain your reasons for dropping out.

Personally, I quit basketball this year (senior year) because of familial obligations.

Familial Obligations...

Funny how so few dare to step out and put family and other parts of life before sports. I hear ya, bud.
