Common App - Activities Section

Hi everyone,

For the Common App activities section there’s an organization that I’m apart of that I technically have two distinct positions, but I’m not sure if I should list them as two? It’s for a city service organization called United Way. I’m the President of the Youth Board, but I’m also a member on the actual Board of Directors for United Way of my city. The positions do have different tasks and responsibilities, so should I list them under two different activities? And same goes for a high school club, Junior Statesmen of America. I’m the President at my school, but also a state officer. Should I just list the state officer position or list both?

Also, on the topic of the activities section. I have 8 activities, but would have 10 if I split JSA & United Way into two activities each. What goes in the additional info section? I have hobbies and some volunteering I didn’t include in the activities section (guitar, coding, photography & hospice), would this go in additional info? If so, how would it be structured? In a resume? Or same format as the activities section?

Thanks!

You can, especially if each needs a few words of description. Or you can list the higher position, then include the other in the description space. Just mind any character limits. Don’t squeeze out another great activity, just to get these on separate lines.

Addl Info is for your comments on something relevant. Sometimes, you need to edit what you do include, make the right choices. Make sure any personal hobbies are truly relevant to an adcom.

Use two spaces to better highlight them. Frankly. you can omit the lesser ones of your 8 orgs – no one will notice. Having blanks is perfectly fine. That “French Noir cinema club” membership you had in 9th grade that’s now long forgotten? Yeah, omit that.

Now I could be wrong here, but I know in my experience with being involved with a state board we considered it a completely separate entity from the school position. One was called the (name of state organization) executive board, while the school’s was called (club) President.

Agree that not every line needs filling in. My kid chose not to fill every line if it meant including the French Noir Film Club, and similar.
I would not leave out volunteer work, if that is what you mean by hospice. Volunteering of that nature says something good about your character.
