Common App Activities

Currently, I have 6, maybe 7 activities that are pretty much central in my high school life listed on the 'Activities' section of the CommApp. Is it worth using up the last spaces with minor/insignificant clubs such as NHS, school volunteer clubs, etc.?

Open to any response - thanks!

It’s really a subjective opinion. Some people say don’t list trivial activities because it makes you look desperate, while others say fill up all you can because this is your one shot to describe yourself to the school.

We went to a couple info nights for Ivy League schools and they were pretty clear that they valued quality over quantity. The impression we got was they wanted to know what you did that you loved… not the various things you tried out.

A lot probably depends on the quality of the activities you report compared the the quality that you aren’t sure of reporting. Example, my D has 8 activities listed that are quality, long-term and directly connected to the major she wishes to pursue. She has chosen to report Girl Scouts because it is well-recognized and includes high level awards. The 10th slot will likely be left blank. It’s doubtful the schools would be interested in her single year on a 4th place mock trial team or the club she founded but which struggled and folded after she transferred to a different school the next year. D finds personal value in the micro-credit club but they donate relatively small sums (and the service hours are nothing compared to the Girl Scouts stuff she’s already reporting.) That 10th slot would really just be filler.

I’m not an admissions counselor though. I can’t profess to have the answers. We’re just going off what admissions for individual schools of interest are saying. Maybe someone else has something more concrete for you.
