Common App and letters of recommendation

So I just sent in an application using Common App and I know there was a section where you were allowed to select teachers to recommend you, but will they be notified that they were selected to recommend me? Would they have to write a letter of recommendation for me and if so how does it get sent to my college that I'm applying to? Would they have to give the letter of recommendation to me to submit to my college?

Don’t you have a guidance counselor?

If your teachers submit their LOR’s digitally, then you will be able to see the word “Submitted” on your app. If they submit the LOR’s via snail mail, then you are responsible for giving them stamped and addressed envelopes to do so.

Wait, you submitted your app before asking the teachers if they would write you the recs??? That’s a bad idea. Yes, they have to write you a rec if you requested them through common app (from the college perspective) but you have to ask them before you list them on your app.

Different high schools handle the setup of uploading letters in different ways. You should talk to your GC if it isn’t obvious what to do. If you haven’t asked teachers yet, go on Monday to ask them. Know when your first application deadline is, too. It is most considerate to give them several week to write them, and some teachers may say no (too many already committed to) or ask you for more info.
