Common app and Supplement Essay topics

Hi guys.

I am now writing my college essays, and I have several questions.

Firstly, as you know, Common App requires you to write 1 short essay about EC and a page-long essay on whatever topic. Is it okay to write about the same EC that I have elaborated in 150 word essay for a free-topic essay? They are not the same ones, but I am just having some bad feeling about writing about the same topic twice.

Lastly, I am applying to Rensselaer and they ask me to write essay on one of these topics:

Describe a significant experience or achievement that has special meaning to you.

Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you and describe that influence.

“They’ll say I impacted the 21st century by my work in...”

Is it okay to excerpt the essay from my common app if the essay is about one of the topics listed? Will it do any harm?

You can probably pull it off as long as you take a different angle.

Don’t recycle any part of your main Common App essay for the supplements.

I would recommend that you don’t write them both on the same topic, but it’s up to you. And if you’re asking if you should reuse your common app essay for your supplement, then I would definitely advise against that
