In addition, I would suggest that you contact the music department directly. Very often, the regular admissions office really doesn’t know WHAT to do with these supplements, but the music department has a clear indication of what they would like.

This is why I’m suggesting that perhaps my S submit the online Common App arts supp to schools as a matter of course, but ALSO send recs/resume and CD directly to music departments.

And yes, we have spoken to music departments at the LAC’s he’s applying to. One asked for a link emailed directly, and already responded very favorably.

But he has not yet submitted his regular Common App OR Art Supplement for that or his other Common App LAC schools, hence my idea to do both paper and internet.

Perhaps I’m just over-thinking

jazz/shreddermom, I would have him send the Arts supplement too, unless the info is repeated in the general application. In my son’s case, he had much different info in the Arts supplement than was allowable in the university app. Worst case, they don’t look at it (but yu’ve covered your bases;) best case, someone in Admissions gets more info about your son.

well, now that you mention it, of course many of the resume activities are repeated. After all, his main activities are musical.

Our situation was slightly different but I found it useful to always cc: communications to admissions AND the music department - no harm in that. So in your case, I too would send the supplement link PLUS a hard copy of portfolio material, including resume and repetoire that highlight of maps out s. or d’s accomplishment in the way they wish to emphasize, and tailor same to the school. Don’t know if it’s related, by s. received a general academic scholarship shortly after having sent full set of portfolio materials to his school of choice, with program notes, layout elements etc. He was statistically an outlier – Now happily and comparatively inexpensively at his school of choice.

What’s a good method for providing a link for Common App Art Supplement (music) when you want several sub-links?

My son wants the opportunity to continue at least some of his music hobbies (piano, sax, composing) when he studies Engineering in college. Five of his schools use Common App, and is contemplating Common App Arts supplement. He does have some interesting components ready to “glue” together. They include a mix of audio (incl youtube) and pdf compositions (or maybe other Finale export type). Not sure what method/tool would be good for the main page.

Sadly he is running out of runway. He thinks he can submit the Common App now and do Arts Supplement later. But I don’t think that’s possible.

The common app link is supposed to be no more than 10 minutes. My son’s is part of a youtube “channel”, however, where someone savvy enough could see that there are other pieces and click on another video if they wanted to. But his official “common app arts supplement video” is no more than ten minutes.

It is not supposed to be an accumulation of hobbies, though, but rather, several different, contrasting pieces in one medium (in our case, guitar jazz).

If he’s doing the electronic common app arts supplement, it must be submitted first, before the regular common app. If he’s mailing it in (go to “future plans” to switch) he can do it later.

jazz-shreddermom… Thanks so much for the very quick and helpful reply! Wow… is 2-minutes a CC record?

Uh ooooh… I had Google’d in to this CC discussion. It looks like Art Supplement may be just for music majors or minors? My son is very talented and is often asked if he will be majoring in music. But he prefers to keep music as a fun/nonacademic persuit. Perhaps he could start arranging that through campus contacts after acceptances arrive.
