Is there no more arts supplement on the Common App?? How do student submit arts supplements? Deadlines are tonight here on the West Coast and we're sort of freaking out. I just assumed there was an arts supplement like last year but I can't seem to find it! Help, please!

sbj the arts supplement shows up when the college you’ve selected indicates they are willing to accept it. Choose the college, click the future plans and fill it in, then go to the supplements. If the college takes the arts supplement, it should be there. You’ll need to upload resume, letter of rec and link to portfolio/youtube, etc.

Ah! Thank-you so much!! So, USC doesn’t take arts supplements. I have a young friend who is applying as a linguistics major but also has an extensive musical background and wanted to submit a supplement to her schools. I hadn’t realized some schools don’t accept that. It makes sense that USC wouldn’t.

I appreciate the help very much!!

USC accepts music resumes and audition links for students applying to the Music College. Those had to be submitted by today, December 1st, to be considered. It looks to me as though there is no opportunity to submit that material through the Common Application to USC. You’re not the first to have this problem. Once you enter ONE college that will accept the Arts Supplement, it shows up on every college list of supplements, whether they really accept it or not. Confusing! I hope they make a change to this next year:

The Common Application should suppress the Arts Supplement for schools that say they don’t take it, so that students know their supplement is not being reveiwed and can take another action if they think their material would significantly impact their admission chances, and the school is open to looking at it through an alternative submission process. It would be nice for the student to have a prompt letting them know this.

We sent an arts supplement package to admissions anyway, to our child’s chosen schools - by snail mail. We called admissions and told them that the child in question was very involved in one of the performing arts, and would they want samples or anything. We sent a disc, resume and two letters of recommendation. This was several years ago.

It might still be worth it to call them on Monday and see if they would like any of that information.

Are this applicant’s musical activities listed elsewhere, in the main part of the application?

You could go on the music forum and ask about this…go to “majors” and click on “music major.”

compmom, I agree. Some students use the extra essay to add a music/arts resume and a link to a flickr account for artists or to an http youtube music audio/video file. I think these days the e-link is more accepted than sending a CD.

Yes, I went ahead and advised the family to upload the music resume with link to performances in the “extra information” section on the essay page of the Common App. I hadn’t realized they didn’t have a teacher letter of recommendation, so they can get that for the rest of the schools that are due on Dec 30 or there abouts.

I just assumed all schools had a place for both the arts supplement and the athletic supplement because last year, when my son was applying, all his Common App schools accepted both the arts and the athletic supplement. Actually, Princeton may have asked for a hard copy of the arts supplement, IIRC, but all other schools were online.

Well, I am certainly learning as I go along.

Thanks again!
