I am beside myself with worry. My daughter is basically unable to apply to college. She can not access her common app. She had access from Aug1 until this weekend. It gave her a message that said there was a log in error. She reset her password three times. She submitted a help ticket. They gave her a new password. Didn't work. She's using Chrome, so it's not a browser issue. She didn't change her email. Just hosed up. So now what......this student who is brilliant, straight A's, SAT score 2350 can't apply to college. I feel like I'm either in a Kafka novel or have fallen into the rabbit hole.

Before you give up on applying to college, maybe you should try setting up another account. If you have tried everything else, you could set up a new email address and create a new Common App account. You’ll have to start over in filling everything out, but all in all, doing so might be better than sitting on your hands and waiting for her account to be fixed.

Don’t set up a new account. That will only make matters worse. You can’t have two common app IDs in the same application season. Common app may delete the duplicate account without warning.

Instead, go into the tools, clear browsing data and then clear everything. Check all the boxes in the list. (Be sure to save all your login and password information because this will make Chrome forget everything.) Then try to log in again.

If that doesn’t work, try logging on with a different browser (ie9 or firefox).

And if none of that works, try logging on from a different computer.

One of those things will work.

We did all of those things and still no luck. We are currently waiting to hear back on a help ticket that we submitted. Thank you for the suggestions. I think it’s more likely a problem on their end, not ours. Not that that helps us in the long run.

It happened to us several time. Just try later or use a different browser. Sometimes it took a day to get access again.

I have also read that may be related to your counselor/recommender uploading into your account. It also took me 5 minutes with multiple attempts to finally get in today. I think it could be just due to internet traffic that overload their server.

Had the same problem and it turned out that I was logging in under Members instead of Applicant. Took 3 days to figure it out, have no idea how it switched over to members but it did. This is on the front page where you log in

Thank you for all the suggestions. We’ve tried every one. Different browsers, different computers, different times of day, using applicant, etc… they are ‘working on it’ with their technology dept. If anyone else has any new magic, I’ll try anything…

Worst case while you work on the problem, if a particular early deadline is rapidly approaching, maybe contact that school directly to explain the circumstances and ask if she can submit in an alternate way (some schools have alternate app forms, or she might be able to submit on paper or send an emailed pdf app).
