okay. so i am sort of freaking out right now. I filled out the common app and looked over it like a thousand times. (oh... I applied jhu ED) and I just looked at my activities essay and i noticed that on the actual common app (like when you are filling it out) it says,
"....unique-even mine." Those were my last words. When i looked at the preview version of my application, it changed it to "...uniqueeven mine." It changed the dash to a weird s thing. I don't know what to do. I looked it up later and I guess the activities essay when you copy and paste it doesn't recognize special characters like dashes. Well i had no idea of this. Do you think this will impact my chances? I am in love with this school and I felt that my essays were soooo good. Like they were all me, and i didn't have one teacher look at them because I didn't want to loose my personal voice. But everything else is spelled perfectly and grammatically correct. PLEASE HELP!!!

You can fax the corrected version to Hopkins I believe. Its not that big of a deal to be quite honest. One grammatical mistake won’t get you denied.

I hope that is true because you wouldn’t want to LOSE your personal voice. Kidding, just kind of funny given the problem here. You will be fine, they have to realize it is a weird character and so it must be a computer glitch. You really think you are the first one to use a hyphen in your essay? I am sure they have seen this before and more.

First, calm down. There is absolutely nothing to freak out about.

Second, there is nothing you need to do. This happens all the time, and each and every member of the Admissions Committee realizes that it is out of the control of the applicant in almost every situation. In fact, many times when your online application is converted to our application review system that irregular characters disappear and we see the original submission by the application.

Third, and most important: An incorrect character on an activity sheet or resume or additional information section is NEVER going to impact on admissions decision. We are not that petty.

AdmissionsDaniel - That is really nice of you to respond. Very cool.

Thank you! Phew!!! I am so relieved. Hopkins is my dream school and I was so worried that that would impact my admission. Thanks AdmissionsDaniel for answering it, for you are really the only one I actually trust on this website. Hope to see ya on campus next year! Thanks again!

So, I was looking through my application and I realized that I accidentally put 22 hrs a week for an extracurricular when it was supposed to be 2. Big mistake. Is this gonna hurt my application ?

yes? There’s a huge difference…better call them up!

its not too late is it?

If you find that you have made a mistake in your application, you should correct it. Your best option is to write a letter of explanation of the error and fax it to the Admissions Office (410-516-6025). Include your name, birth date, and school on the fax cover sheet. Do note that we do not process application error explanations through email, and you are not able to re-access your application to make the correction.

Thank you for your response, but considering that I’m an early decision applicant, is it to late for me to fax the correction?

If you are admitted or deferred ED then yes you need to fax the correction. As an admitted student you do not want to have any incorrect information in your original application. As a deferred student the correction would be reviewed when your application is evaluated during the RD round.
