So, I brought my College Official's Report to my academic advisor to have him fill out the recommendation portion. He said that he would not fill out that part because on the form it says that the person has to have "access to the applicant's academic record and disciplinary record". I tried to explain to him that most people have there academic advisor fill it out, but being the stuck up, stubborn professor he is, he wouldn't budge. Only advice he could give me was to send it to the dean of students and have them fill it out. So I went down to the dean of students and they told me that they would not fill out the recommendation part either and that they would only fill out the disciplinary part. They told me to bring it up to student services to have them fill out the rest.

Sooooo i continue my journey up to student services, where they tell me that they will not fill out that part only the "background information part". So I am sort of stuck. I don't want to leave it blank, but no one will help me and everyone I talk to has a short temper and doesn't know anything about the transfer process. Is it bad for me to leave it blank? Should I just cross it out? I already have a solid recommendation, so how important is this college official's report? Thanks for the help!

Ehhhhhh…stand-offish administration…its happened to me too. For the college officials report does the school you are transferring to have it as a requirement? For mine, they don’t want it. I would suggest calling the school you want to transfer to and ask them how you should handle it.

All the schools I am applying to require it I just don’t know how important it is in the application process. I am applying to a bunch of schools so calling all of them would be time consuming.

Could you have the advisor fill out the parts he has access to, and then have him send it to the student conduct office (or whatever institution handles disciplinary actions) to fill out the rest? This is what my school does.

Right, if you have a professor as academic advisor, maybe he really doesn’t have access to your academic info. Shouldn’t the Dean of Students have all the information?

If not, at least some assigned segment of faculty should be able to take care of it. Maybe the Registrar’s Office (they issue transcripts)? Any university has dealt with transfer students before. Just a suggestion, but try to call the university info line or inquire within the Dean’s Office once again.

My academic advisor is a professor (I haven’t had him before), but he told me he would not fill it out. I guess my best bet is to go back and beg, but I don’t know if that will do any good. Dean of students and the registrar both said they would not fill it out and both of them told me to give it to each other to fill that part out. There is no communication between the different offices and the overall system is messed up. I can tell that no one really cares and that they are pretty much offended that I would consider transferring out. I am tempted to just write a letter and attach it to my College Official’s report explain how the people who were suppose to help fill it out, refused to help. Is this a bad idea?

I tried telling them that I would attach a cover letter or do whatever I needed to get it filled out, but all said no. I am sort of getting desperate with deadlines in the near future.

I mean, technically you need a dean to do it, but if you’re really having this much trouble then I would say do that.

Or just ask someone to check off “No basis” on the Common App form if that’s what you have, as this will neither hurt you nor overstep someone’s abilities.

You are getting the run around. The CA College Official’s Report states:

If you have a prof fill it out or leave it blank, you run the risk of not having a complete or having an incorrectly filled out application. I’d advise you either go back to those offices or have a parent call. There is absolutely no reason why SOMEONE at your school can’t fill out the recommendation part. If it was my kid, I’d be on the line immediately to find out who has responsibility for this kind of information and wouldn’t stop until I did. This is not rocket science, your academic advisor and the Dean’s office need to work together to determine who fills out the form, and saying that nobody will do it is not an acceptable answer. Good luck!

P.S. If you can’t get satisfaction, do write a letter saying that nobody at your school has the responsibility to fill it out, and have your advisor, the Dean’s office and the registrar all sign off on it.
