I'm originally from Trinidad and Tobago but was born in Canada. My Dad's entire side of the family is Indian with some white and my mother's is extremely mixed ranging from indian, white, chinese etc. I'm never sure what to put for these questions however on the common application they offer much more specific choices and I know it says to check all that apply but I'm still not 100% sure. Appearance wise, I look Indian but I identify myself as simply Trinidadian as I'm also very mixed. Technically, West Indian. So on the common app you can check asian , but it refers to actual asian countries. There is a Caribbean option but it is under Black/ African American which I don't really descent from. There's also white/ middle eastern. How much attention is paid to this? If I were to check them all would it affect me in anyway if they don't actually refer to the actual countries being described? Also if I check Caribbean but it's under the Black/African American section does that signify that I'm black Caribbean or simply of a Caribbean background?
