Should we have to write the activities that are already included in our resume in the ACTIVITIES SECTION OF common app. I mean, all those activities will be in our resume right, and colleges do not want repetition, they say? So. what to do? Suggestions plzz :D

Thanks a lot #adayin!
Thought to register coz I think being here helps a lot in app process! :)

@Adayin
Can you give me some ideas about resumes?
How do we send to the colleges if we are applying through commonapp?

some colleges will give you a place to upload your CV in their supplement section. however, from this year, you can’t attach your CV on commonapp itself. just fill the activities section.

Commonapp/Education/Grade
What is our rank,weighted or unweighted?
I did A levels.Should I leave the cumulative GPA and other two boxes following it,blank?

What should we fill in Commonapp/Education/Honors?

@Zoras10:

GPA should be unweighted and make rank decile.

to calculate your GPA equate this equation hai. This is how we do.

25%=1.0 GPA
50%=2.0 GPA
75%=3.0 GPA
100%=4.0 GPA

This is where it gets tricky in A-Levels:

A*=4.0
A=3.75
B=3.5
C=3.25
D=3.0
E=2.50

no bro, you are not supposed to fill in the GPA box. just leave it empty, as well as the class ranking. international kids are not expected to fill in those boxes as far as i know because our education system is different from theirs. also, A*, A both are considered to be 4.0 and B is 3.3-3.7, C=3.0 and D=2.0. saw it on fulbright’s website. still, it shouldn’t matter to us.

In the testing section
If I confirm that i will self report my testing score then should I upload the hard copy of score or just fill my scores over there?
o I did A levels, therefore I choose CIE A levels as Examination Board but then it is asking me the Academic subject and I have no clue what to write there because the character limit doesn’t allow me to list all my subjects so what should I do?

@Horcruxes:

Even thought the website says that, the colleges in Nepal use the system I mentioned. Regarding the USEF thing, it was before A* was introduced (3 years only)and it hasn’t been so many years since they re-calibrated the system. So feel free to use the GPA system I mentioned.
Message me and I will send you a proof if needed!

The point of introducing A* was to distinguish the higher-ability students, not to dilute the value of an A and other grades. So any translation system that re-calibrates decades old systems to accommodate a new top grade without solid understanding of the differences between the American and other systems is suspect.

Anyway, all high schools (is that what you meant?) here don’t use that system. Besides, the cumulative GPA is required by American colleges, so your entire high school record has to be averaged, not just A Levels. Regardless, liberal arts colleges (even Harvard undergrad is a liberal arts college, after all) will ignore the GPA you send because they have their own internal processes. I emailed Oberlin, for instance, and they told me that they calculate GPA as A*,A = 4, B=3, C=2, D=1, which is harsh compared to UK Fulbright standards, but not negotiable.

Also, I hope you realize that USEF will not be considered as a proper foreign transcript evaluation service like World Education Services. If you have WES’s translation methodology proof, then I suppose the GPA calculation could be given some consideration. Besides, Fulbright UK recommends against entering a GPA if you have A Levels because our systems are not comparable to American ones.

It is true that most colleges have their own system of calculating GPA. For instance, A* meant the same as compared to an A when I applied to Connecticut whereas when Davidson replied me, A*=4 and A=3.5. So the point is that colleges differ with the GPA and course rigor as they differ with admission process.

For most high schools in Nepal, the system of grades conversion is muddled. There is discrepancy in calculating the GPA. For instance cumulative GPA is supposed to be the mean of all scores in high school. Here the schools only calculate the GPA from Board exams (most do). So the only sensible thing to do last year was to approach each college individually and ask. Most replied me with same and surprisingly my school used the same method too. So just sharing.
Regarding WES, SOKA needs a transcript evaluation from WES. It is sensible to enter your GPA if you have it calibrated by the school.

I get that many schools here may just include board exams on the transcript, but if you want to calculate a GPA, the SLC results will have to be accounted for methinks. It also surprises me that Davidson treats A as a 3.5 and that it even bothers to convert international transcripts to GPA’s because many don’t – that is the point of holistic admission, after all, and a GPA is just a number.

Soka requires a transcript evaluation from IERF, not WES, although WES might be accepted in lieu of IERF. A school’s evaluation will not substitute for that requirement.

Okay, I am not surprised by Davidson’s policies anymore. “Davidson College awards credit for A and B grades on A-Levels in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, and Physics.” Many colleges grant credit for a C too, even Yale!

See, there is the problem. School evaluation does not calculate GPA from 9th grade. Thus leaving school to have an arbitrary conversion of grades into GPA. This created a problem.
Last year one of my friends was asked to send her 9th and 10th grade certificate again via counselor.

The point is, most schools have little knowledge of college application. USEF does not have all the answers too. So, it’s one step at a time that we climb this application ladder.

And then we might pass! :P

Does USEF really offer a translation for our transcripts? Who do I have to contact? (Also can you PM me the “proof” lol)

@Phantasmagoria18:
Care to mention your Stats?
school even?

760 CR, 700 M (I’m still considering retaking the SAT for this score lol), 800 W.

A*'s in sociology, biology and physics, A’s in math (A2) and English language (AS).

You have a good chance of cracking the admission process. Informed and with good grades. I hope you do get into a good college just like all of us.

Ok brothers!

Now would you please tell me what shall I do regarding that section in commonapp?
Should I leave that whole section(rank,GPA,Examination Board) blank or what??

oh well, you never know! but I hope you get into a good college too :)

Zoras10, if your school will submit GPA’s, ranks and all, then you can and should enter those into your self-reported form thingy. Otherwise, it is OKAY to leave those blank.
