Common App EC labelling Question

On the common app, for the EC section, we're only given the ability to select the activity name from a list. So for something like "science/math," should we list ALL science and math activities under that category (e.g. research, math competitions, science olympiad, science competitions, etc)? Or should we separate it somehow?

Thanks!

Separate them and describe each activity in your own words, but put them under the same category.

when you say separate them… do you mean like. separate activities? so i would have two science/math activities?

Well, I’m putting the name of the activity in the “Details and Accomplishments” Line, and then my actual details and accomplishments in the “Honors wons, Positions held” line. I don’t know if its the best idea though.

I’m doing the opposite because I think the adcom will read the positions line first.
so my position line for a speech activity reads “Secretary of Debate Team”. but, I’m also mail a two page EC resume because there just isn’t room on the app to properly explain everything.

you think they will read the positions line first?

Yes, that’s what I think. Assuming they read top to bottom, they will get to the position info first. Use the preview button at the top of the app to see how your app will appear to the people who read it.

okay. actually I’m going to ask an admissions officer and will get back to you wonderful people.

Common App support says that you would enter that information on the Details and Accomplishments line.

Last year, I put the positions held in the positions held box. For the Details and Accomplishments, that’s where I wrote the Activity and the additional info.

You could totally just attach a brag sheet/resume as well.

Well I understand the advice but I have a number of ECs where it makes more sense to list the title of the EC in the positions line. For me it fits and flows so much better with that structure, so that’s the way I’m going to present it.

^ I don’t think you should do that. It makes no sense first of all, most students don’t do it your way, and common app itself has said to not do that - contact them yourself.
