I wrote about video games in my Common App essay, and people are calling me retarded for doing so… It’s not as superficial as “I love gaming,” though. I explored gender stereotypes in video games and linked it to real world problems. I am a girl if that helps. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone is willing to read it and give me a feedback on it. Thank you!

Sure. Also, I strongly disagree with the post above. You don’t need a smart subject that has nothing to do with you. This should be a PERSONAL statement.
i think that’s a great subject tbh
shows you think beyond just immediate entertainment but also think about the societal aspects behind the things you do and actually interact intellectually with things that many others would probably consider lame as you said. don’t listen to those people though. it shows intellectual vitality which is something colleges really look into, plus you tie it with your identity as a girl and your own experience with it which is great. plus it might show some diversity since that’s also wanted by colleges, it shows you’d probably be a tolerant person that is understanding of diversity and would want someone nice like that on their campus.
