I'm kind of in a rut as far as essays, go, having written several drafts and scrapped all of them. I just noticed the "Topic of Your Choice", though, and since my luck with the set prompts has not been good, was kind of curious about it. But how does this work? Do you write your own prompt a la UChicago's 5th option or do you just let the topic come through in the essay?

I think either of those ways works. You can pick your own, wacked-out prompt, or you can just start writing and let your creative juices flow. Don’t forget, though, that whichever route you choose, your essay should be solid and have a point, ie, don’t just ramble on endlessly.
