Common App Essay Help?

Hello everyone,
Yes this is my first post! I would just like to say that WOW this site is amazing! I've decided to man up and ask a question of my own, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :)

I guess my main question is if writing a flat out truthful essay is more important than trying to create a clever essay that will grab the reader or vice versa. I have a few friends that seem to be taking one side or the other, but you guys are the experts so I wanted to ask you guys!

I'm sorry guys but I guess this is also a "chance my essay topic" post...so sorry but I thought this might help you understand why I'm asking this question in the first place!

Basically, I was positive for many years that I would major in music performance because I was really REALLY passionate about it, so school and grades were not a huge concern to me. But during junior year I found out that I was totally crazy about becoming smart (seriously that's all it was!). It totally changed everything, and now I'm actually doing really well in school and academics. Like most kids NOW I want to go to a really good school (like Johns Hopkins!), but yeah I'm a little late in terms of preparing something good for the admissions folks to look at. I have a decent amount of things to put in my resume (especially a lot of music EC's and awards!) but it's nothing like you guys. I was hoping either way that they would understand that I have really changed and want them to give me a shot!

So...what strategy do you think would be better if I want to get that message across to the admission folks?? Like is it really THAT lame to not try to amuse the reader with the best essay ever??

Thank you so much! You guys really make me want to succeed in going somewhere great! :D
