Common app essay ideas

I’m an international student now studying in the U.S. The essay really bothers me cuz I feel like I have nothing to write about, I mean I dont have any special interests or experience. So I’m thinking to write about my experience after I I came here. Since I’m an introvert, I found many difficulties at first. (No friends+Being ashamed of my accent+don’t talk to people ) so I watched YouTube videos to know more about American culture, tried to participate more in sports activities, etc. Now I’ve changed a lot.
Is it okay to write about how I overcome shyness and what I’ve learned about cultural differences
Or is it better to write about how I’m an optimistic person since I can find pleasure amidst the suffering(basically they’re two different thesis but the main contents are the same)
Or both are not good for essay?

I’m one to say write both essays and see which you like best, but another tip would be to write on whatever you’re most comfortable with. Writing should be genuine and while it’s important to pick a topic that gives you the best chance at admission, I believe it’s equally as important to not have to force yourself to write something.

Ummm thank you a lot :))

I’m also thinking to write about how I learn to be a responsible person. It’s like when I was a primary school student, I skipped class with my friend one day without thinking. The teacher called our parents to see what happened but of course they didn’t know where we were. They became so nervous and were afraid that we were missing. They called police, and broadcast the news to find us as soon as possible. Finally we were found by my friend’s mother in a shopping mall nearby my home. Later I knew that my dad was so worried about me, he even bought a new bicycle and rode it whole day to make it easy to find us. And I was shocked by how mad and anxious he was. It really made me realize that I should be responsible for myself and for people who care about me

IMO, i think you should combine the two so that you have somewhat of a “revelation” in your essay. Talk about how you started out as an introvert with with low self confidence, and then talk about the skipping class incident (just make sure that when u talk about this u don’t come off as lazy or delinquent) and then discuss your actualization. At the same time, I don’t believe this is a “golden” essay (for my tastes) because it is somewhat of an overused topic in terms of “I came from overseas and life was so hard but now I am so much better”.Have you explored other essay options? I know you mentioned not having a lot of special experiences or interests, so maybe talk about things you’ve observed or noticed about life, like the way people have treated you or how others have influenced you? I know a friend of mine who got accepted to like 6/7 on her essay “The Man and the Tortoise”, where she talks about how one evening, while talking the subway home, she notices that the man sitting next to her (with no legit reason whatsoever) is holding a tortoise in his hands like it was totally normal. She basically uses this incident as a metaphor for accepting herself and coming to terms with her strange mannerisms despite her chronic self-consciousness. Kind of like a “don’t judge a book by its cover” but very, very eloquently written. She’s a very introverted and “at-ease” person (hasnt had a lot of big experiences and stuffs) so an approach like this may be good for you as well

Thanks for your advice

I kinda feel that my topic is somehow cliche but I have no ideas… I used to think to talk about curiosity since I’m easily attracted by new things and have some tries. When I was a child I even tried to incubate an egg though failed. I also wanna learn when I found that something is fascinating. The problem is that I cannot keep my interests for a long time, I like music but I played the guitar fitfully, I played the violin for almost 10years but then stopped. Same as painting, cooking, and dancing. I will think about what you said, thx!
Btw I skipped class because I didn’t wanna go to English classes lol

How about the way Americans treat others influenced me. I mean like after I came here, i feel that many people are friendly and optimistic, even if we don’t know each other. In my school or in a mall, I can always hear people say something like “you look so cute/ I like your shirt” And some people will say hi to me, it made me happy. It’s just simple but I’ve never have this kind of experience before in my country.
Just wondering if it could be a topic

Absolutely. It’s those small, “slice of life” ideas that will differentiate your essays from the others. Choose something small-- like that friendly optimism-- and build your essay from it.
