Common App Essay Lengths

Hey all,

I'm filling up the common app right now, and I know both of my essays are a good 50 words over the limit (the personal statement and short answer ones), but they both display ifne on the preview pdf.

I'm wondering whether anyone else has the same experience, or even whether any of you ever did receive a limit. I tried putting in a bunch over the limit and it still seemed to come out fine. SO yeh, just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

yea mine are longer too.. i think as long as you arnt wordy or carry anything on too long then it's fine, 50 words is fine but 100 is not lol.

I think it doesn't matter how long your long essay is as long as it is concise and interesting, mine is 800

Aye, 740 words that are essential!

I heard that the Common App (online) puts a strict limit on number of words... or did I just hear wrong?

It annoyed me to find out Brown's online app does that. Oh well, I shortened down the essay in question.

Online i believe it does, but i send all my apps by paper...

mine is 1000...is this ok?

i mean everyone says its a sweet essay and they were really into it
but is this too long?- it fits in the common app space

My short essay on my interest is 250 words

Long essay is about 450

I think 1000 is way too much. It asks for 500. I think that would just show that you can't follow directions. I think it was Yale that had something on their website to that effect. That is twice over.

50 words over is absolutely fine, maybe even 100. But beyond that unless you are a Pulitzer Prize winner it is probably unnecessary.
