Common App Essay Question

I know the Common App has its own essay questions (to a degree), but for schools that accept the Common App do I have to write my essay on one of these questions or can I write my own?

Also, does my Common App essay have to be the same for all schools?

You need to pick one of the prompts in CommonApp and write an essay. Usually, you use the same essay in CommonApp for all schools. You can make some changes in between applying to different schools (see link below). It would not be wise to write more than one CommonApp essay anyway. In addition, most schools in the CommonApp have their supplemental essays.

Also, the last prompt is usually “topic of your choice” in case you don’t feel the other prompts would produce a good essay

^ elosowassy,
I don’t think it is the case this year.

@ billcsho - your link above referencing how to make changes between applying to different schools - this link is from 4 years ago. Do you know if it still apply with this year’s on-line only CA? If yes, the procedures are the same as what’s listed in the link? I am not at the point where I am ready to submit but definitely need to know as I will submit next week. Many thanks.

No topic of choice this year …

You can only submit three different essays. You can submit the common app with various changes however many times you want, but the essay can only be submitted in three different forms then the final form will remain permanent for all subsequent submissions.

That is true. There is a limit of 3 versions.

In other words, Angelhair, you can change everything other than the essay as many times as you like (activities, etc.). The only limit is on the essay - as noted, once you get to your third version, you’re stuck with it for all remaining schools.

Thank you missouriboy, billcsho and dodgersmom.
