So these are my thoughts about the common app essay to as of now:

1.The overall point of the application is so the school gets a picture of a candidate as a whole including their likelihood to succeed academically and socially

I think my teacher rec’s, test scores, and grades will show me as being able to do well in the classroom.

My resume and common app spots for ec’s will hopefully show a desirable amount of community/school service. And, I will use the spot for elaborate on an ec to talk more about community service stuff.

So, am I right to suggest that a big part of the essay portion is to merely show that one can write at a college level?

I ask this because the topic I want to write about is not academic at all. It is about an extra curricular activity, but by most standards not strictly community service.

I think my new topic would be more unique and truer to my personality and could be written quite well. I could definitely write an essay that would showcase a particular passion of mine.

Another thing is that it does not necessarily fit into any of the prompts either.
It is closest to the prompts:

“A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.”

Or,
“Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.”

Last thought, what does “experience” mean in those last two prompts? Is it a single event, or could it be interpreted to mean a long series of similar events? Is it more of the “the time I went fishing with grandpa” or “my summer job working at the International Space station”? {Neither are the topics I’m considering…}

Thanks in advance for any advice or thoughts about the essay.

{P.S. I think I can sum my too long post with a question: Should I write about the essay I really want to write about and would be passionate about, or write about something that fits into one of the prompts and would be about a more academic/community service type experience?}
