Common App Essay Topic of your Choice

If I choose to use "topic of your choice" for my essay, should I write down what the topic is that I'm answering? The essay is rather simple and self-explanatory. It isn't one where someone is wondering what the question is.

do colleges look down in any way for the people that do topic of your choice? because like i think mine is kind of related to one of the choices but if its ok to check topic of choice i would much rather do that...

thanks

If they looked down on it, they wouldn't offer it as an option. Now, I'm only guessing with this next part; but as long as it's a good topic that reveals something about you, I doubt they'd care.

One more question, does this essay HAVE to fit onto one page? I would like to put spaces in between paragraphs and if I write down my topic, it will no longer fit.

Thanks

Can anyone answer post #4 please? Thanks so much!

No .
Going over a page by just one or two lines is aesthetically displeasing, however.

I've been told by many many people on this board that you should REFRAIN from going over one page. It sounds like you really don't need to, AmericanGraffiti. If it all fits w/o spaces between the paragraphs, I see no reason to go onto another page--it's like waving a flag that says, "my essay is on the long side!"

For "topic of your choice," are we supposed to "invent" a topic--like an essay question? Something along the lines of the topics the CommonApp gives you? My essay is about the tech work I did for a school theatre production... do I have to be like, "Describe a project for which you worked your butt off" (obviously in proper English)?

if we choice topic of our choice do we have to make up a topic and actually write it down like above our essay???

and is a page and a quarter ok??? (670 words)

can someone please answer the question above and is it ok if we have to title or is that a must?

Both questions have already been answered in this same thread. To the third question: you don't need a title but it doesn't hurt to put one.

The college counselor at my school says you do NOT need to write down what the topic is...or put a title on it. Wondering who told you that we need to write down what the topic is?

mmm, i guess I'll just write down the topic just to be safe. can't hurt

You don't need to write the topic but you should; for the readers' sake. It only makes sense if you ask me; you should be clear what prompt you are answering.
