common app essay...weird

The best essays are usually never about college. If I had to be in the shoes of an admission's officer, I would look forward to those unusual essays because I'd probably be bored to hell by the end of week 1.

My common app essay was about how no one can pronounce my name. I also referenced Pokemon -_-

I just finished writing my common app personal essay, and while it is well-written, I also have to say that the subject is really weird...I'm not sure if i should use it as a college essay...the topic is unusual and doesnt really relate to cornell or any other school...it doesnt have anything to do w/colleges at all.

mine is about how last summer I went on a trip w/my grandmother to the tiny rural village in eastern pakistan where she grew up, and somehow ended up taking a course at a local cultural center on gel candle making w/a group of other women who basically made gel candles for a living or did it as a hobby.

did anyone else write an essay on a weird/unusual topic that they used?

I wrote about fishing, and I must say it is a masterpiece.

my essay is about how i was afraid of what others thought and didnt really participate because of this etc... (u know, the typical teenage stuff) and how last summer, i went to this trip and met this kid who was outgoing and there, i made more friends than i have ever made in my whole school career. I know it's sort of cheesey, but it matters to me, so i like it

That's good =P

kevinscool - hey its not really cheesy - i'd say it's a lot more original than an essay on 'why education is important to me' or 'why getting into college has been the goal of my life'...not that those are necessarily bad.

i did put a little bit of humor into mine, but it's introspective as well
glad to know i'm not the only one w/a 'weird' topic

I wrote about how I was skipping band class one day and I ended up in an abandoned hallway at my middle school and how I found a dusty old bassoon there. Then I said how much I sucked at bassoon, but it was okay because there was no one to compete with... so no one knew how bad I was... I went on to say how that shaped me into who I am today-- it doesn't matter how much I suck, as long as I try, even when no one else has the courage to do it... yeah, pretty weird, but different (I think) :D

mine was about William Wallace.
It was me in the place of him running up a mountain, and then how i was just listening to the theme song on my ipod. (inspiring, determined, blah, blah).

Any1 wanna exchange essays and give each other critique? ANyone have AIM or something?

i wouldn't mind reading anyone else's, I appreciate good writing b/c it inspires me.
Fajiste - I definitely wouldn't mind reading yours, since it's a 'masterpiece' and it's on fishing, which is pretty original

I wrote about the significance of elevators and I got accepted..hahah. I think it was best personal essay I wrote though.

wow that is the most unusual/original one i've heard so far...this thread is making me feel better about writing about gel candle-making...
...which is, btw, a complicated and extrenous (sp?) process, and not as easy as one would think

i wrote about a light in the darkness.... :D

ohhh I love making gel candles! I've only made a few of them last year, but I stopped because of how much I kept messing up and wasting gel...Hahha. I think thats a really creative topic molly4190

I answered the diversity question with a story about my "rich white friend from New Jersey"... it worked :)

yousonofatree - yeah it is really fun, but i messed up a lot too. you see, i was in another country where i dont really speak/understand the language that well so i didnt really get it at first haha

oh and melting gel on a stovetop in the middle of august in the deserts of pakistan....its HOT haha
