Common App. Essay

I plan on writing on the following topic:

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community.

Is it okay if I write about being a Canadian at a US High School? Does that answer the question?

It would seem so. The essay topics on the common app are broad, so don't worry.

is there anything i should avoid so it won't be offensive?

The obvious topics: don't talk about your sex life, love life, experience with drugs, an inclination towards violence, etc.

It seems to me that Canadians in American high schools aren't that different from those born in the United States (except for the friendly teasing), so you have to really emphasize one thing that distinguished you from your American counterparts.

And don't make something more melodramatic than it really is. Otherwise, everything else is fair game.

bump...bump...bump
