Common App Essay

I was talking to a girl who applied to 11 schools last year and ended up going to northwestern. she said she applied to a lot of ivies and wrote a ton of essays including each school's supplement essays. I was just wandering, how many essays does a person write for the average college app, to a good school I mean.

Like if we are talking about Harvard, is it usually just one for the common app and then one for the supplement?
And most importantly, is it normal to change the common app essay for each school or should i just write one good one and send it to all schools, then write different ones for each supplement?

Thank you!

It is possible to change the common app essay, but it requires making an alternate version of the common app, and is discouraged. Write a really good essay and use it for all schools. Most schools will ask for a supplement essay, which you can gear toward that school, and a number of short answer type essays. The important thing is to make sure every thing you write reveals something about yourself, and is not just blather.
