The essay prompt is: Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?

The first thing that came to my mind was to write about failing my drivers license test and how discourage I was until I found an opportunity to take the test again the next week. However after giving it some more thought I began to think that the my drivers test was too trivial of a topic to write about in my college essay.

What do you guys think is the driving test fine or should it be on a more serious topic?

I say that nothing is too trivial of a topic unless your writing makes it seem trivial. My essay for this prompt last year was about being a germaphobe and trying to fix a vacuum, haha. Just make sure that you convey it in such a way that we understand that, while it may not seem like that big of a deal to us, it’s a big deal to you (just don’t be dramatic about it, obviously). Does that make sense?

I think an idea like this is on the right track, however it does not reveal any depth of your life. Try to think of something that was absolutely devastating in your life and how you coped with it’s ramifications. Try to include details of how this incident made your grow as a person & prepare you for the real world (college).

^ I disagree. No one necessarily wants to hear a tragic essay. Write about a failure that you think you can write about in a unique and personal way. If the driver’s test is that for you, then go for it.
