What is it for? is it a main essay for all colleges relating to commonapp?

Yeah. Some universities will also require you to write a supplementary essay.

And we can send a different main essay to different schools now, correct?

The whole "Alternate Version" thing?

Of course you can.

By the way, do you think it matters if you submit a better essay for the common application or for supplement? I wonder this because it occurred to me that if you submit a better essay in the supplement, the school will believe you care enough for them to spend time for their unique essay. But if you show your best in the common app, they will think it is just one more school you apply to. Does it make any sense?

I definitely don't think that your "main" essay should be of a lesser quality then your supplemental essays. After all, the supplemental essays are only supposed to be about 100-150 words each (at least the ones I have to do are). It would be wise, in my opinion, to write the best essay you can for the common ap, and then you're when doing the supplements, revise them to make sure they measure up to your main essay.

Well, many colleges I apply to require a second 500-word essay. Most have a free topic, so I may recycle them anyway. And with the application versions, you can create a unique main essay for a college even in the Common Application.

Any other opinions?
